Meanwhile, some of the 180-lb "heavyweight" legends you've been romanticizing pranced around with their hands at waist level and rarely threw stiff jabs at all. atsch

 

This is surreal. The list of skills and tactics used by modern fighters that were rarely if ever used by the pre-Dempsey greats is too lengthy to write out. There have been so many obvious advances in everything from footwork, stance/balance, combination punching, jabbing, etc. A lot of the specific tactics you've mentioned were far more valuable in a period where most heavies threw very few punches from distance, rarely threw fluid combinations, regularly fell in with their punches, used little effective lateral movement, and spent more time grappling with each other than throwing punches.

Honestly, I have been more depressed than impressed when watching past 'greats'. That's why I thought that maybe others have footage unavailable to us that is more flattering.

I mean, there was a prime Sanders vs prime Willard thread a while back. If you simply LOOK at the two fighting there can be no friggin doubt in anybody's mind who is objective that Sanders is way better in every aspect except size where he gives up about 10lb. Yet people were picking Willard :nut Beats me.

I hear that. Perry's stock continues to sink. In truth Wlad has an all time left jab and right cross that is pretty technical.

 

Lewis was koed twice by right hands over that low left.

Prime Ali and Holmes had the head movement to to avoid right hands.

Greats such as Loughran, Tunney, Ali so many more fought with hands low and were able to avoid blows with correct boxing skills.

Wlad in turn is wide open for right hands. It's the very sad state of hwt boxing today .....worst I have ever seen....that allows him to get away with it although he has been koed three times by nobodies let's not forget that.

 

Worse than Leon Spinks winning the championship? Worse than guys like Roman, Coopman, Dunn, Zyggy, Daniels, Stander, Scott Frank, Tex Cobb, Rodriguez... getting title shots? Worse than a Jim Braddock or Marvin Hart or Tommy Burns or Jess Willard holding the strap?

History would say it's the worst which you choose to see in today's division.

Holmes was a sucker for the overhand right. Ali was a sucker for the left hook.

 

Refusing to give proper credit to current fighters is nothing new, it seems.

 

No and neither is the idea that modern fighters are better, due to the natural evolution of the sport.

The camps that we see on this forum are almost comically mirrored in every era!

I'd argue there's glimpses of brilliance even before that like Fitzsimmons etc.
