I believe that Braddock would have beaten the following: Hart, Burns, Willard, Sharkey, Carnera, Baer, Patterson, Ellis, Spinks, Berbick, Fury, and others. Braddock is underrated big time.

I think Tyson fury should be given a fair chance to prove himself before being included in this type of argument.

He couldn't string together that many wins in a row against the guys he actually did fight.

Well, there are two components when considering the "worst lineal HW champs of all time" - one is their h2h merit and the other is how deserving they were of the opportunity to be in the right place at the right time with the same weak-to-begin-with, stylistically disadvantaged, shot, or weakened champion.

In the case of Fury, it happens to be my opinion that he makes the list on the former criteria but he undeniably is among the worst going by the latter. As someone pointed out, he didn't beat a top ranked contender, of which you can only say the same of Leon Spinks.

One beat a shot Ali, having done nothing to deserve the chance. The other beat an unwilling, scared-of-his-own-shadow version of Klitschko at the end of his own gradual but pronounced decline in physical abilities.

:conf Not a lot between them.

Apologies, had to redo the poll (accidentally voted in reverse order from what I intended on my own stupid poll :patsch ) - so please re-vote if you already did.

I don't use the criteria of " how they earned their shot. " that's a different argument alltogether. You could start a thread entitled " least deserving challengers to get title fights," and then I might agree with placing fury among that list. But when the thread is entitled " rank the worst lineal champs in order " I prefer to wait and see what a newly crowned champion DOES with a title before slapping him with that label.

The JH Lewis-UD 15 Laskey-UD 15 Max Baer-KO by 8 Louis-W 10 Farr was a respectable way to close out Braddock's career as he realized his two goals in boxing: 1) Win the HW Championship...2) Win his last fight.

Over the first four rounds against Louis (who by then had been humbled against Max Schmeling and had rededicated himself), Braddock decked Joe with a sweet counter, then held his own until arthritis began catching up to his ability to function as the youth and superiority of his challenger also took over, but it took the best one punch knockout of the Bomber's career to lift the crown. Both times Jimmy had previously been on the floor, he got up to win.

Previously, Braddock got to Loughran on the strength of a massive stoppage win over a streaking Slattery in nine, blew out a 38-1-1 Tuffy Griffiths in two, and the decision over the favored Lasky was a massacre.

Watch the first four rounds against Louis. That's when Braddock himself said he produced the best fighting of his career, his optimal blend of experience with physical ability before the arthritis kicked in. (He said years later that he retired after Farr because he could no longer move backwards due to the arthritis. Look carefully, and you can see that decline in his mobility from Loughran to Farr.)

Three wins against HOFers, JH Lewis II, Max Baer and Slattery by stoppage. Also a far better performance against that version of Louis than Leon Spinks could have ever managed. Braddock lost his title to a monster by insisting on going out for the eighth round on his shield.

Buster Douglas might be a more suitable candidate for worst lineal HW Champion than Braddock. His lack of training and non effort against Holyfield was pathetic, he'd quit in the past, and had horrible blowout losses to the likes of Bey and Savarese.

Tokyo Douglas mops the floor with yesterday's Fury, and his win over prime Tyson is far more impressive than being the busier man by default - with circling and pot shots - than an unwilling old trigger-shy Wlad.

Douglas and Fury are a cut above these guys.

Spinks, Briggs and Seldon are some of the worst.

Laugh all you want at Fury, he's going to be around for a while.

After Saturday nights debacle, I think people can appreciate Mike Tysons performance a bit better in trying to save his crown.

    Especially compared to Klitsckos.

I find it hilarious that Fury is considered ****, yet the man he just clearly beat has been regularly lauded as a top 5ATG .:patsch:huh
