I still have not seen a Super-Heavyweight that I would bet on to beat Joe Louis or Ali in 5 out of 5 fights.

It may be necessary to create the Super Heavyweight division and move the boundaries of the heavyweights from 175-215 and The Supers from 215- up and then if we get a great champ let them fight. I don't think we will have lightheavys challenging the 250lbers unless we get a great one but it may be time for the upper weight divisions to make adjustments

Especially over 15 rounds, with smaller gloves I can't see any of the big guys winning anything.

Exactly right. The Superheavyweight is not a true descendant of the traditional division. They are a throw back to the Jes Willard and Carnera type guys only there is finally enough of them to go round and have their own weight class. It's not boxing either, it's almost a different sport with different rules. All that crowding and hugging.

Agreed.. A 6'2", 215 lbs man taking on a 6'7", 250 lbs man is like having two guys in separate weight classes and there's a reason why the latter sized men have ruled the division for so long.

Why isn't the solution just to penalize (and eliminate) excessive holding and grabbing?

    I don't like the idea of a super-heavyweight division.
Some of Wladimir's most worthy opponents were actually around 6'2 and 220 or less.

In this day an age the smaller heavyweights have cruiser division anyway, so I don't see how another division would change things. Maybe it will encourage more guys to get bulky and fat, not much else.

No, some of them would probably have beaten Louis more often than not, at the very least.

There was more hugging and holding in Tyson-Holyfield and Ali-Spinks than in Saturday's fight.

The reason is bigger gloves, shorter rounds, different kinds of training, decline of combination punching and refereeing. Also a guy 6'7 and 250 dosnt need to be so heavy it just makes the shorter guy so much further disadvantaged if he decided not to give away so much weight.

We cut the 230 plus guys from the real heavyweight division by giving them superheavyweight class and fans will start to enjoy "heavyweight" boxing again.

The thing that frustrates me was the lack of clean punches landed from both fighters.

That's already what's been happening. Make the cruiser the premier division and call it "Heavyweight" and it will have more luster. Bigger guys might even slim down and box better.

With smaller gloves I doubt the biggest guys would even be competative against Joe Louis. Of course if you put bigger gloves on Louis, slow him down with an extra 15-20lb of modern muscle he has a different pace and would be much more handicapped against Buddy Baer wouldn't he?

Smaller heavyweights dont have the Cruiserweight really do they?

Where would a Joe Frazier or a Joe Louis fight today? The boxers who excel at 200-220lb dont really have a place in boxing anymore as they are too disavantaged with the giants at heavyweight now.

The cruiserweight division is basically for aspiring heavyweights who are not big enough to compete at that level and they dont earn as much money as heavyweights would have done in the past. Changing the weight limit at Cruiserweight and calling it heavyweight will revive the heavyweight division. The Super heavyweight division may end up resembling a freak show of giants who have little boxing skill but at least we will have a division to resemble heavyweight boxing as it used to be.

The thing is the last time we saw heavyweights around the size of Tyson and Holyfield they were beaten easily by the Giants. Maybe decent big ones beat good little ones?
