"fascination with the biggest, baddest man on the planet"

I was at a friend's house for Thanksgiving and he used to be a boxer and trainer. He wasn't talking about the upcoming Klitschko-Fury fight. He and his teen-age sons were into a MMA fight between two women and showing me the tape.

And why not? It was a fiercer struggle and more fun to watch.

That may be so, although of course it is a matter of taste.

I'd invite you to compare the respective purses earned by the competitors, however. Heavyweight boxing commands purses so astronomically out of synch with the talent of the competitors that only an explanation of the type you quoted is reasonable.

The allure of the heavyweight division has always been that's it's the top division and, in theory at least, whoever rules it is the baddest man on the planet. It would lose most of its lustre if there were suddenly a new bigger division above it. It wouldn't really be the heavyweight division any more.

At least up the weight limit at Cruiserweight then to 215 or 220lb then and call it the 'Old Heavyweight division' because its Old Skool :D

Your 20 years too late. They are already established in all but name. It's time to make it official to stay in line with Amatuer boxing.

Getting rid of the name that never worked won't cause any confusion.

In so many debates we keep hearing past champions would be cruisers now anyway. Why is that? Is it because modern superheavyweight make them seem too small? Who was there first? The old heavyweight or the big heavyweight?

Isn't it time for the baddest man on the planet to be called a superheavyweight?

One more question for those who dont want the cruiserweight limit upped.

If in 10-20 years from now the HW division is ruled by 6ft 11inch guys who weigh 270lb are you still going to think that 200lb is an acceptable limit for the next division down because I think that would frankly be ludicrous. It already is ludicrous so we should change it now.

Then you have a 45lb leap from light-heavy to cruiser. That leaves room for at least one more division. Super light-heavyweight? Junior cruiserweight?

I got no problem with having the cruiserweight limit upped if it can be agreed across the board by the ABCs.

Do you really think that glove size makes that much of a difference?

Right. I would probably even support raising super-middle and light-heavy to, from 168/175/200 to something like 172/185/210.

Good luck with that! Fragment titles even more and see more fans abandon boxing for MMA.

A 316lbs 7 foot champion lost his crown to a man he outweighed by 100lbs and only just squeeked by a 46 years old 216 lbs Holyfield. If in a few years another Mike Tyson comes along it will make a complete nonsense of the idea of a super heavyweight division imo.
The new champion was dropped by a 6 inches shorter 44lbs lighter ,moderate hitting cruiser in 210lbs Cunningham.

Why would a cruiserweight limit of 205 instead of 200 "fragment titles even more"?

Because I don't think you will get a consensus agreement on it from the alphabet boys. Five pounds won't make any real difference anyway ,you'll just get guys competing in both divisions and ratings being even more ridiculous than they already are.
