Why does everyone say Liston couldn't cut off the ring?

He wasn't in his prime for Martin and Ali. He definitely showed he could cut the ring against Williams.

No he didn't, Williams came out and met him toe to toe in fact he was the more aggressive of the two.In their first fight he didn't take a backward step.
    Here is their first fight.

In their second fight Williams is slightly more circumspect, boxing from a wide stance, jabbing ,and looking to counter with his big left hook . On the rare occasions he gives ground Liston just follows him around. You don't actually know what cutting off the ring means do you? Simply put, when your opponent moves to his left you take a lateral step to your own right, and the opposite if he moves to his right.Thereby keeping him in front of you.
Here is their second fight .

Show me an instance in either fight where Liston demonstrates lateral movement?

It's totally baffling that you would make a thread about a subject you are demonstrably ignorant of:huh

Um no I know what it means. It's mirroring your opponent instead of following them. I'm almost positive he showed it against Cleveland Williams.

No,actually you do the opposite to your opponent ie , he moves to his left ,you move to your right, and vice versa. I 've provided both fights , there is no lateral movement from Liston in either fight and there are two explanations for that, the first is Liston did not know how to and the second is it was not necessary as Williams was always there in front of him.. As to your earlier excuse for Liston not cutting the ring against Ali and Martin because he was past his prime, the tendency is for older fighters to conserve their legs more not less, therefore he would have been more likely to be have exhibited lateral movement as he aged if indeed he knew how to do so,,he didn't , neither then nor at any other time in his career.

That's what mirroring is. & no I think he lost this ability. I've personally been to one of his fights. My grandfather has filmed another. The article said, in his prime nobody cut the ring better than Liston. It didn't say throughout his entire career.

This is what Angelo Dundee wrote about the Foreman fight in IN THIS CORNER: Round two....But now, George was cutting the ring off on him, better than we thought he would, forcing Ali to move six steps to his one-two. George was placing his left lead foot between Ali's feet, forcing Ali to stand either in front of him and trade or move backward, what is what ali did, moving to the ropes above our corner where George began to pound away at him with heavy-handed clubbing blows."

The article is wrong, dead wrong. The author of that book WK Stratton doesn't know his a*se from his elbow as far as boxing is concerned.
You believe it but dismiss Archie Moore's opinion because he never fought Ali? When did Stratton fight him?:huh

There is no filmed evidence of Liston ever cutting the ring off, there is plenty of evidence to the contrary however.

At 49.23 Moore gives his opinion of what Liston should have done against Ali

Foreman understood the geometry of the ring very well , but he is not the subject under discussion.

Yes, I understand that. I was pointing out what Foreman did and what Liston (going by all available film evidence) failed to do. I personally know of no film where Sonny demonstrates this move. Some here disagree.

    Only the OP I think.

And he is not open to logical or rational debate on the subject.

At 49.23 Moore gets his point across.

But Swagdelfadell or whoever he is ,doesn't want to know,if you aren't prepared to listen and digest replies, why make threads?:huh

Thanks. I was talking more about the hospital trip though; Chuvalo has that line about how he went partying anx Ali went to the hospital. I don't doubt he was wounded (certainly being punched to the body for 15 rounds will do damage) just that he was hospitalized.

Anyway I just put in the phrase sonny Liston cutting off the ring into Google. And crazily enough it's split. Half the people say he was great at cutting off the ring. The other half says he never learned how.

Did he? He also said Marciano lacked one punch power. Liston had long arms and quickly dispatched of smaller men who could escape him.

He cut off the ring well enough. Not being able to catch Ali at his absolute fastest should not factor into this equation

Ali does not factor in this equation.
    Machen
    Martin
    Do

Liston quickly dispatched smaller men who stood in front of him.

Show one example of Liston cutting off the ring.

I said Marciano was not a one punch ko artist and I stand by that.He ground down his best opponents, who wilted after a steady bombardment.

You're the guy who said Wlad is a clean fighter who does not foul aren't you?

    Care to comment on this?

You know I was ready to jump down your throat and disagree with you, tell you you were being stubborn. But I can't. Liston doesn't cut the ring off not in the traditional sense.

I have a theory why though. It's his unusual body proportions, that ridiculous reach in particular. Liston had a very long jab that he could land from anywhere it seemed and (more to the point) possessed an almost unique ability to land power punches like hooks and uppercut from a distance greater than midrange. Liston could follow guys around landing jabs and then unloading; he didn't really need to cut off the ring because you couldn't get out of the effective range of his punches quick enough. The exception of course were guys like Ali and Machen who were so fast that they could; and therein lies the rub.
