When commentators on ESPN or anchors on a big network seriously throw out comments like Mayweather is the greatest of all time or Tyson is in the top ten ever? Why isn't the sports history and the fighters who were a part of it more well known and how can this be fixed? Its ****ing frustrating for these faireweather fans to dare act like they have a clue

Based in a skill h2h level you could argue both points.

I don't really pay it too much mind. My expectations are low when it comes to the boxing knowledge of mainstream sports journalists. When I see guys like Stephen A. Smith and Skip Bayless discussing boxing, I usually change the channel and hope they don't pollute the minds of casual boxing fans with their bull****.

I tend to get more annoyed by some of the stuff I read on boxing forums. I mean, these are presumably hardcore boxing fans, so their knowledge should be better, right? Then I look thru a random thread and read posts of people downplaying Michael Spinks, saying he wasn't any good because he got demolished by Mike Tyson, and then praising what a "tremendous fighter" David Haye is.

Because it's speculation and can never be proven.

How do you rank them in a skill/H2H level?

A lot of people do like to hype up whatever the latest/current thing is. They don't have any knowledge of the history but that doesn't prevent them from saying "greatest ever".

On the other hand, there are others who go over the top in disparaging whatever is latest/current, denying greatness altogether and over-estimating the things of the past.

I'm redoing my rankings but from top of my head both are top 75.

i was listening to an mma fighter talk about roussey/holm and he said it was better than douglas/tyson because that was a 'lucky punch'. maybe not the point of the thread but i thought it was pretty funny.

Give me an effin break this is exactly what im talking about!

Greatness is about heart through adversity, career workload, career accomplishments, era of competition, skill level. Also taking into account some of the differing rules in combat (example 15 rd fights). Given ALLL the great fighters and all the different and more populous and difficult eras in the history of the sport that have occured til now, you seriously have to be trolling

Why are you worried? It is merely an opinion, that I suspect neither of us agree with. If it came to a debate, I would hope both of us would be able to win the argument rather easily, so there is no need to get so excited.

Because it is disrespectful and a diservice to the blood, sweat, tears and entire lives that people, that FIGHTERS have dedicated to the sport to just be disregarded nonchalantly as if they dont exist by some flippant TV show anchor missinforming thousands of people on the program. Why wouldn't you be irked by this as a boxing fan?

I don't even think it's opinion. It used to bother me, but I realized that most of the people conducting interviews on sports shows are just talking heads and only having a basic knowledge of most sports.

I remember when Mike Singletary was named the 49ers head coach years ago, and the woman interviewing him on Fox Sports said she heard the first call he made when he got the job was to Bill Walsh (who Singletary wasn't close with and who had been dead for some time).

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7EGd8gXjtf0

That would be like a woman reporter on ESPN saying to Tyson Fury that she heard the first person he phoned after winning the title was Emanuel Steward.

It happens in every sport. Most of the people walking the sidelines or commenting on camera are just there because they have white teeth, nice hair and can read at a high-school level.

Fans of other sports have the same complaints. Very few people on major sports networks are experts on every sport they cover. And many aren't experts at any sport at all.

Well the thing to keep in mind on the internet is a lot of the 'hardcore' fans on forums etc are just attention-seeking brats that have pathetic lives and just troll and attention-seek to find personal fufillment.. but that is easily overlooked rather then getting on a platform, like you say stephen a smith do etc etc. Cringe-worthy..

If you wanna argue their place in history you're entitled to do so. You can argue whatever you want and your arguments have no bearings om whether or not I decide to troll.

Having Mayweather as the greatest of all time or Tyson top 10 all time is a matter of opinion. You shouldn't really get mad or frustrated just because some people rate boxers differently than you do.
