He was a great fighter. Don't get me wrong. But I've actually seen people argue he could beat Liston. Based on what? The fact he would always be discouraged when someone stood up to him? Liston was probably the most feared boxer of all time. He wasn't scared of anybody. Tyson flat out admitted he'd be scared of Liston. He was actually crying because of his fear. People have said to me "Well Tyson had a rough childhood." They're always making excuses for him. Best Answer: You mention Tyson and immediately hundreds of little Tyson fanatics come rushing out waving their excuses around. "It's Don King's fault, it's Desiree Washington's fault, it's his wife's fault, it's Buster's fault, it's your fault, it's god's fault for taking cus" IT'S MIKE'S FAULT GET OVER IT. Liston was one of over 20 siblings and ran away from home when he was a kid and you're telling me Tyson had a tough upbringing? What, someone killed one of his pigeons? Liston was hounded by police and under threats from the mob all his life. Tyson was 24 when he was soundly whipped by THE GREAT Buster Douglas. Who went on to beat...oh yeah, Douglas was average. Liston was an old man in comparison and could've gone unbeaten for a long time if he hadn't run into a prime Muhammad Ali. So for a start, when making a fantasy Tyson matchup, you must first ignore all the tysonites who's memroy doesn't go back further than 1985. Liston was one of history's very meanest fighters, and when somebody stood up to Tyson he didn't react well, Tyson would be quivering in his boots under the dark glare of Liston. People argued Sonny had questionable stamina, but he went the distance several times, including dropping a decision when he broke his jaw early in a fight early in his career. Liston's a hard man to judge because he was at his prime before he took the title from Patterson. He was ducked for so long he had aged by the time he was champ. Now we know Liston had the strongest jab in heavyweight boxing, this along with his all around strength and toughness is enough for him to take Tyson into the mid to late rounds. We all know that's a key in beating Tyson. Liston would stand up to Tyson and keep him at bay with the powerful jab However after afew rounds Tyson fades and gets worn down, Liston goes in and KO's him. and if Cus was alive Tyson would still get beaten. and if he hadn't married Robin Givens Tyson would still get beaten.
This whole "Tyson couldn't handle adversity" bull**** is getting way out of hand. You people must be watching different tapes. Tyson had an iron chin and will. The way he almost bombed out Douglas after getting his head boxed off for 8 rounds straight is astonishing. The way he hung in there against Lewis round after round nearly getting killed was a tremendous display of willpower.. Tyson must be the only fighter in the history of the sport who can't lose without people questioning his mentality for some reason. :-(
And as for Liston...wow...who did Liston beat again? There are guys that Tyson beat that could go through Listons resume. There are guys that Tyson knocked out in the first round that could go through Listons resume. No disrespect to Sonny but accomplishment wise he isn't even close. Mike fought in a significantly better era. Sonny can beat him, though. But acting like it's not even close is ridiculous.
Bit rich to be ragging on Tyson for losing to Douglas when Liston was out-boxed and had his jaw busted by 180lb Marty Marshall. Anyone think Marshall would even last the distance with any version of Tyson, let alone beat him?
I'm admittedly on the fence as to who would win between them, but not whether or not Tyson had heart and a great chin, he had both. Just because you loose fights, either to better boxers or because you didn't train etc, doesn't mean you've lost all the attributes you possessed before the fight. Very few fighters could have stood up to those punches by Douglas and perhaps even worse, those punches by Lewis, for as long as he did. Guys without heart or great chins, simply wouldn't have lasted as long.
I never said that. I actually stated THE opposite of that. I still think he was a good fighter. But not nearly as good as certain posters think he is.
You forgot to mention the fact that Liston was green, and Marshall made him laugh then caught him. You think Danny Williams would last with any version of Sonny Liston?
I agree he had opponents stand up to him and overcame them, Razor Ruddock comes to mind, and against Douglas when on his knees he was still endeavouring to stuff his gumshield back in and continue .
