Floyd beat a war torn Pacquiao who had nearly been killed in the ring by JMM 2 years before. Fury beat a dominant champion who according to his fans hadn't lost a round in ten years. Easy choice.
The BWAA criteria for Fighter of the Year is "who did the most for boxing the previous year". Easily, the one that did the most for boxing was Floyd Mayweather Jr. The fight with Manny Pacquiao broke PPV sales, records. The fight was easily the biggest event of the year, not only in boxing, but in sports. Therefore, the winner should rightfully be Floyd Maywweather Jr. followed closely by Tyson Fury, for his win over long time reigning Heavyweight Champion Wladimir Klitschko...!!!

Pretty much I know Floyd's win over Manny was a huge financial success and both guys were considered greats, but everyone including Vegas had Floyd winning quite easily, and frankly it's because Manny looked bad for quite a few fights before going into the Mayweather fight including a huge KO loss to Marquez Wlad hasn't lost in over a decade, and Fury was a lamb to slaughter in the publics eyes, and yet he completely outclassed and damn near shut out the man who hasn't even dropped a round in Germany let alone a points loss
Wlad was p4p #3 when Fury beat him. Who was the last guy to beat a pound 4 pounder that high? ... Fury is the obvious pick.
Tyson Fury. Huge underdog. Beat a long reigning champ, winning almost - if not - every round in the process. A close second would be Mayweather, but the fact that Pacquiao was injured and then May fought Berto afterwords kind of ruins his year for me. Then it would be Golovkin since he made large strides in his career with the unification fight, PPV, sellout. Then a toss up between Roman and Canelo. Roman has looked more spectacular but Canelo did more for his legacy by becoming the lineal MW Champ.
Pac wasn't the Pac of old as i acknowledged in my original post, but he was still one of the best fighters in the world and even a diminished Pac is better P4P than Wlad, in my eyes. Fury gets bonus points for being the underdog in the fight, but Floyd still beat a trully great fighter despite all the negatives surrounding the match up.
I think beating Pac was a great win, however he was still a fighter who lost 2 of his last 5 before that fight, and was clearly diminished, and let's not forget it took place in practically Floyd's (adopted) hometown Fury went over to Wlad's backyard where he was untouchable and simply outclassed him, even moreso than Floyd did Pac (again imo) so you have to give it to Fury
I voted for Tyson Fury. Here's why he gets it ahead of Mayweather: - Tyson comes from a background of only having 24 fights and 7 years of experience, whereas Mayweather had 47 fights and 19 years of experience before taking on the two ATG's. Tyson Fury was never seen as anything close to an ATG. The gap in perceived abilities between Fury and Klitschko is astronomical, compared to that of Mayweather vs Pacquiao. - Manny Pacquiao is notably past prime, had been knocked out recently so never returned to being the same fighter again, and perhaps had an injured shoulder. He also fell out of love with the sport. Whereas Wladmir has been the dominant HW champion who before the Tyson fight had built up an ATG reign displaying utter dominance for over 10 years consecutively, without barely losing a round. Although Wladmir is past his best, Tyson Fury beat Wladmir in a way that makes that rather irrelevant especially considering how slow paced the fight was which favours Wladmir, yet - Fury outsmarted Dr. Klitschko. Whereas, Manny with his lesser athleticism, killer instinct especially after being knocked out lost his own niche that would have been responsible for most of his success in a fight with Mayweather. A small man who wasn't scared to trade with Cotto, Margarito, Barrera, Morales and Marquez fought scared against Mayweather. Whilst Mayweather is a little past his best, Tyson too is entering his prime now so wasn't necessarily there yet. - The consensus view is that the 'Fight of the Century' is 'FARCE of the Century' which Floyd and his fight strategy was responsible for, thus how much credit do you want to give a man who signed and agreed to a fight that pales in comparison to what it COULD have been? Mayweather wasn't FIGHTING to win. - Floyd beat Berto, Wlad beat Hammer - Hammer is actually pretty good.
