It seems I am forced to argue for and agin the same event.

Bub, I think the stoppage was a hair early as my 1st reaction was that it was too early. I saw Quillin get in ready position, and while his legs were solidly beneath him, his hands coming up, his face looked shaken and wide-eyed. It surprised me that A) he didn't go down. B) He seemingly recovered so quickly.

    **But**........

That said, I also think that the stoppage was "acceptable" based on the idea that it is better to stop it too soon than too late. It is far too easy to criticize a ref when they act in the heat of the moment. As has been stated multiple times by many, including me, Quillin had taken plenty of punishment up to that point, and was quite possibly about to take more.

If forced to vote, I'd say good stoppage.

I wouldn't really have a problem with stoppage had it happened a bit later. I might be wrong here cause i saw the fight without sound but the ref should've warned him to show him something or give him a 8 count.

I understand we need to protect the fighters lives but people pay good money for more than 85 seconds of fighting. And when you know that the guys are good friends who got paid 1.5 M each and are already talking about a rematch it's hard no to think it was a money grab.

How so? I could understand this line of thinking if they had had an uneventful fight that went to a humdrum decision where no one took any risks. TKO1? With many hard shots about the head and body that staggered a guy on several occasions? Jacobs' shots had serious steam on them when he was going for the finish. On TV for all to see?

    Anyway, standing 8 not applicable.

I thought the ref was a little late with the stoppage but seems no harm done. Hopefully Jacob's next fight is a little more competitive.

Mayweather's reaction to Mosley's shot wasn't anywhere near as dramatic as Quillin's to Jacobs'.

Mayweather didn't get held up by the bottom rope with his eyes rolling up showing mostly whites between wide-peeled lids after Mosley nailed him.

If he was going to have the lucidity (or basic ring IQ to begin with) to clinch or take a knee, or if he was going to land something in return to slow Jacobs down - he would have done it by then, during the ample opportunity that existed for him to do any of those before the big overhand right that punctuated matters.

Difference is that Mayweather also did everything he was supposed to after he got caught. Held, wrestled, stalled, and allowed his head to clear.

    Thats not how it went.

The ref only jumps in after Jacobs turns around to walk off because it looked like Quillin was on his way down. Jacobs knew Quillin was finished and had no interest in inflicting further damage.

To anyone saying that was a bad stoppage, please take a look at Quillins eyes and tell me with a straight face he was in any position to continue. Nobody in their right mind would let him carry on.

Quillin had NO IDEA how to respond to what Jacobs was throwing at him. Just kept his gloves fixed in place and hoped for the best, as though you're going to be lucky enough that a world class boxer looking to finish you off is going to aim for exactly where your gloves happen to be for the 90 seconds they're blasting you. :patsch

He didn't have even a moment to think, he couldn't set anything up because Jacobs was on his ass and in his face from the moment he got stunned, it reminded me of Molina-Demarco only Quillin was far more hurt, I don't think Quillin really had the ability to process what was happening to him for a few seconds. Maybe with that short pause he composed himself and gathered his wits just slightly. Who's to say Jacobs wasn't seconds from punching himself out, and we could have seen round 9 of Gatti-Ward all over again?

    IB, stop it.
IB, Quillin got hit with two right hands before the stoppage. There is no standing 8 count. The ref can't stop Jacobs attack and then judge him if there is no standing 8 count and he didn't immediately stop the fight. He must've thought that Quillin was going down. Quillin didn't go down. He was hurt and wobbled. The ref then observed him. Flat out wrong on the refs part.

If Quillin had fought Golovkin, the ref stopping the fight before they touched gloves would've have been way, way too late.

100% correct on Dock's part. Looked into Quillin's eyes and saw two wide, glassy orbs. Quillin was unfit to continue.

Sure didn't look to me like he was in the process of composing himself in that short pause. If anything he was much worse off after that last overhand right than he was any time before it.
