Going all the way back to the ponce de leon fight (and don't quote me cause I haven't seen it since it happened). But I remember ponce de leon giving broner trouble by simply moving in and out- Broner fights out of a shoulder roll thingy and if you're quick enough you can make those guys keep their hands home by way of good movement*. Even toney sometimes struggled against guys like that. What's interesting is that the guys who exploited this flaw were not pure boxers like Davis but pressure guys like Maidana and a puncher like de leon. They did it in two different ways- de leon popped in and out and made broner act if he wanted to get off first, while Maidana took the angle (although Maidana is a little big for this comparison). Anyway I haven't watched either Davis or Broner extensively, just about 4 or 5 fights a piece so I'm sure someone who knows each guy better could give you a better breakdown. *I think Floyd is the only shoulder roll guy who moved very well
This. I don't see Chapo being cowed by the size advantage, nor do I see Broner standing up to his best shots. (and he would be forced to soak them up, given what he took from Maidana and Porter)
Thanks for the reply. I haven't seen either fight since they both first aired but my takeaway was different. I thought that the PDL fight showed that Broner could be susceptible to ambush-style attacks while he loads up and tries to nail his opponents with knockout punch counters. I thought that Maidana overwhelmed precisely by attacking and taking the fight to him, and looping punches around his Philly shell. I'll have to watch them both again some time but I thought that they fought Broner very differently than Davis Jr. would have so I still don't get why anyone would think 135-lb Broner would be an easy win for Davis.
Enough to know he'd get tagged all night by Davis Jr. Broners an embarrassment to the shoulder roll. He doesn't do it Well at all. He's a decent fighter though, I'll give him that.
Broner's a flat footed unskilled plodder that can't integrate his offensive output with educated pressure to save his life. Hardly difficult to imagine a prime Davis beating him comfortably considering his effort against Rosario who was far superior at getting shots off on the front foot, picked punches better and hit harder.Davis might get knocked down or hurt a couple of times, and was a notably flawed fighter himself, but he was more than good enough an outfighter and mover at his best to beat a shuffling mummy like Broner.
Broner was never capable of Floyd's type of movement or Toney's in-the-pocket reflexes, so it was pretty damn stupid of him to emulate both and strive to be some kind of hybridized version of both of them.
No I think you've got it right. I wasn't communicating correctly because ambush is a much better descriptor of what PDL did than in and out which is simplistic enough to almost be useless. To me, part of the key was Maidana was he was just too big and strong. Broner couldn't keep him off because he couldn't back up effectively in the shell. Anyway I think everyone (and I'll speak for everyone because why not) feels that Davis could exploit the weakness of the shell by darting about, ambush-style. He's cert quick enough. But the shell isn't that terribly limited. Toney wasn't a great mover but he caught up to Nunn. Anyway I always thought broner was a talented guy who was too undisciplined to stay at weights where he could be really effective. Although you could argue he was a too big guy boiling down. Who knows?
