If that fight had continued and Klitschko gone blind, his fans would have screamed for that doctors license to be revoked.. Forget the 13 years of controversy about there never having been a rematch
When the hell did I say the Martin fight never happened? I was referring to the fact Martin was the only fighter who knocked Liston out cold. Please don't put words in my mouth. I have no trouble doing it myself. Thank you though.
"Nice try though" Is you just being stubborn. Say whatever you want, it won't change, that at the end of the day, a completey washed up Evander drew against a prime Lewis. You don't think Holyfield beat Lewis in their second fight? 8-4 What is this the comedy forum? Literally everybody felt he was robbed. In the 2nd fight, Holyfield would fight in spurts. Lewis didn't do anything but throw a pawing jab with nothing on it all night, which looks great on punch stats but doesn't really do anything. I thought Holyfield won it (or more like Lewis lost it ) 7-5. The scoring by one judge of 9-3 (117-111) for Lewis is flat out ridiculous.
Who the hell did Lewis fight who was even remotely close to Cleveland William's level? It's funny because you don't mention the fact that every big puncher Liston stopped was prime while Lewis stopped washed up punchers. Lewis also did his fair share of ducking. Something you could never accuse Liston of. It wasn't even close. Just an inaccurate, biased post.
Agree with this except the last two. Liston would always exercise his neck so he could absorb punches better.
I've always got a soft spot for Sonny Liston, one of my favourite hw greats. He would definitely have a more than fair chance (sorry more than a great chance) of beating the sub par, unfocused Lewis who was stopped by McCall and Rahman (which seems to be the only reasons given for Liston beating him). But in fantasy match ups you take both men at their best. With that if Sonny was'nt perturbed by Lewis' skills, strength, size and jab then I could see him him giving Lennox real problems (ala Mercer) for 6-7 rounds. But still it wouldn't be enough to beat a focused Lewis at his best, which he would be against Liston. Lewis by KO in 6-8. It ain't hard to imagine Liston folding inside 2 tbh. Either way it would be an almighty task for Liston to beat Lennox. Too big, too skilful and too many ring smarts.
Thread title shoulda been 'I think Liston would beat Lewis and you can't tell me otherwise. (Coz i don't like Lewis)' lol Good to see Van boxing and mr magoo still schooling peeps.
good point. And you can even add the other Williams that seems to be held in esteem---Roy Williams. Add Cleveland and Roy together and where are those mighty wins? I am of the opinion that taking on undefeated Mason at the time was a far bigger hurdle. Those guys would last as long as the other Williams Lennox got out of there on his climb up the ladder....Derek Williams. I knew people thinking Lennox was in over his head against that guy, at the time.
I like this match-up a lot. I think it could play out a number of different ways, but I tend to favor Lennox slightly. I think he had the tools, skills, and athleticism to outbox Sonny, and I believe Lennox was mentally strong enough that he wouldn't be intimidated by Liston's famed cold demeanor. I think Lennox has a tricky time early finding his rhythm with the jab, but perseveres and remains competitive enough that, maybe 3-4 rounds in, he begins controlling the range by winning the battle of the jabs. As the rounds progress, Lennox would begin breaking Sonny down mentally and physically en route to a fairly competitive win on the cards, or possibly a late stoppage (but I'm thinking the former). Of course, Lewis would have to be really on his game to see things play out in this favorable possible outcome, but if he made more than a few mistakes, Sonny would make him pay, and if Lennox managed to get seriously hurt against Liston, I imagine Sonny would make fairly quick (and possibly vicious) work of Lewis in no time after. But I tend to believe Lennox had the complete set of tools required that I'd favor him. Would sure be a fun one to watch unfold if only we had a working Delorean. :smoke
