After Lewis beat Tyson in summer 2002, the # 1 contender for his IBF title was Chris Byrd. First the unconfirmed rumours came out that Lewis had accepted the Byrd fight. And some folk were looking forward to seeing how Lewis would deal with the tricky Byrd southpaw style. Then the news came out shortly after that Lewis had accepted a million dollars and a car from Don King to hand over his IBF belt which King then put up in a title eliminator between Holyfield and Byrd. Byrd proceeded to win the title but then looked unspectacular onward in his title defenses against Oquendo, Golota and McCline before being slaughtered by Wlad.
Byrd and perhaps Ruiz, a case, even if it's rather weak, can be made for Lewis avoiding these two fighters, likely because of money. The rest are just plain stupid.
swagdelfdadeel you have a serious obssesion with liston and prime frazier. (by the way, foreman destroys liston and prime frazier).
My impression is not that of the majority. I think Lewis would actually benefit from mid-range exchanges rather than long ones. Size and athleticism both help Lennox establish control at a distance. But laying back ironically increases Sonny's chances as well. Sonny, I believe, possessed greater ring craft (not to be confused with generalship). What ultimately tilts my opinion back to Lewis is his ability to flip the script as it were. He very readily turned up the aggression where necessary. He wasn't always the best boxer in there, but he often found success when he got rough and nasty inside.
That's how I see it. Sonny's big chance is Lennox is a pitcher's mound fighter and can he get him off that mound? He has that jab and great left hook off that jab and a strong right hand once he can position those feet. That's the area of concern though. I favor Lewis in the footwork department. Sonny has to nuetralize that and then be very accurate and selective with his punches when that window of opportunity is there. I think that window is there for about 5 rounds and after that Liston will have absorbed too much to land the ko shot. I just think Steward---what a superior corner--has Lennox change things up like 3x during the fight to confuse Liston. Come to think of it, that Liston corner is not as good as the worst corner Lennox had with Correa. Another factor with Sonny could very well be the Bowe type thing---I like him much much better when he is the big guy in there. I really don't like him against bigger guys or even matches with guys his own size. Those A+ results are against the small guys, not the big boys. I think that is a real question mark with a Sonny Liston. He's murder against the small guys but gets nuetralized otherwise.
it was worth the laughs generated. u clearly don't appreciate the humour, but its good to see it actually stung u.
Single blows koed Lewis twice from far less a fighter than Liston. That being said Lewis was not in the kind of shape he should have been for both these losses. Prime Lewis bests prime Liston probably by late fight stoppage.
A glass-chinned fighter-like Lewis- can't be the greatest head to head fighter. The glass-chin means every fight was dangerous for him.
