It had to be fixed. No way Tubbs could lose to that guy.

The Lionel Butler punch was legit. Tubbs got caught while trying to throw a punch. This was a glancing punch. No way Tubbs would be ko'd by that Ellis punch. DIVE

Looked like a good temple shot to me, not at al a glancing shot. And Ellis cranked it very well.

That said, I wouldn't be shocked if Tubbs could have gotten up.

100% a hard punch and knockdown, only Tubbs knows if he could get up.

Looked like it might have been a rehersed fixed fight.
Tubbs didn't even attempt to defend himself, he just leaned in and waited to be hit. Impossible to say whether that was a legit mistake or a deliberate non-effort.
Sure, the punch landed solid but that doesn't make the fight legit.

People say "but what would the motive be ?" .... it was Ellis's hometown. They might have been trying to build him into an attraction again.
People can say "He was going nowhere" but that doesn't mean they weren't trying to get him somewhere and set up with that one fight.
Because they failed to take the precaution of fixing other fights wouldn't preclude that Tubbs was bought off for this one.

Nielsen v Tubbs in 1995 is even more suspect, imo.

Just can't see any fighter purposely walking into a haymaker for a fix, the shot was clean and hard. Tubbs went down no clowning there IMO.

A blatant fix if I ever did see one. Ellis wasn't even white

You know it's a shame sarcasm is so easily lost in text, although I have a sneaky feeling you may have detected it

Dude, I'm not making any convictions one way or the other. But if you turn up the volume on your computer or phone you can actually HEAR that punch land... It was right on the temple... Ellis knocked out about 19 of his 20 career victims.. Tyson knocked out tubbs with a left hook too.. Of course Tyson is leagues better than Ellis as a "fighter" but power is power.. And tony was also quite a bit older when he met Ellis as well .. Could it have been a dive? Possibly.. But I really don't see a motive for one. Ellis wasn't being groomed as a world beater. And tubbs was still getting some pretty decent paydays, making it all the more reason to keep his marketability up.. And it certainly wasn't unheard of for tubbs to get taken out early by a big shot from a man who could crack

Perhaps, Tony Tubbs was a very good fighter his problems outside the ring held him back a lot and may had to do with him coming in unprepared and being caught early by the likes of Ellis and Butler. Still its hard for me to see how a fighter with the level of skill of Tubbs could be taken out by a guy like Ellis. Tubbs had a tone of ability and when he was on he was a worthy contender for any champion. Tyson's win over him I feel was one of his most impressive performances because Tubbs looked to be in good forum that night and giving Tyson a good go until getting caught.

    You could be right.

I guess the punch was flush, but like one poster says, the way Tubbs comes out and just stands right there and appears to wait for the punch was very odd.

Whatever happened, legit or not, this was a very strange and unexpected result at the time.

The legs rising up off the floor that much, and that controlled, is a red flag that something is up. That only really happens when you throw your bodyweight back but want to roll to avoid landing too hard.

Someone genuinely knocked out via temple shot won't go down like that. They'll drop like a sack of potatoes, which often leads to more damage from their head hitting the canvas. Tubbs was with it enough to sit and roll back to prevent that.

A solid punch did land cleanly.
