Can we just clarify that taking a punch from a 250lb guy who has knocked out 12 opponents in a row, and needing some time to recover, doesn't show any weakness of chin whatsoever? Seeing lots of people say that this morning. Ridiculous. (Big difference with the kind of wobble you have too. Joshua didn't lose his legs and start doing the Amir Khan-Chicken-Dance - they stiffened and he had to take a round off to get the wind back in his sails. No harm in that.) This is Heavyweight boxing. Lewis. Wlad. Ali. Holmes. Each and every one of those greats tasted the canvas and was wobbled throughout long, successful careers. What matters is what you do after you've taken the punch. How you adjust. How you recover. How you reassert yourself.
Glass jaws exist in boxing. I don't know if Joshua has one certainly, but it is pure glass jaw denial to say that his whiskers are not suspect at this point. Time will tell if Joshua has a glass jaw, but those who are questioning it are not at all out of bounds.
Calling Joshua "glass jawed" because he was momentarily stunned with a flush shot against a guy who can punch is pure stupidity. Same goes for all the Wilder-Nichols BS though.
They do, but taking a round to recover from a punch isn't a sign of one. Nor is even hitting the canvas in HW boxing, as history proves. It's unlike other divisions in that way. Ali was down 4 times in his career. He'd be written off as a bum after his knockdown by Sonny Banks nowadays, despite having one of the best chins in boxing history.
It may not be. As you can see from my elaboration above, I think those who are saying he absolutely does have a glass jaw are jumping the gun. But his getting wobbled by this level of opponent certainly could indicate that his whiskers are not the greatest.
What heavyweight boxer doesn't get hurt. They all can be hurt except that extremely rare few. Name a heavyweight who hasnt been hurt who is fighting today? Its hard to think of many
Whyte's a solid opponent, with legit KO power. Guaranteed we'll see him fight at top level again - looks like a solid candidate for a David Haye fight next year, IMO. I don't think he wobbled at all. He stiffened and covered up. Big difference. Never looked in any danger of going down. Even then, the idea of the HW who will never be KOd is a fallacy. The best chin in HW history I can think of is Vitali, but he's a freak of nature - him aside, pretty much all the greats throughout the years have either been KOd, knocked down, taken big punches and taken rounds off to recover. That's my point. We now have some new standard for measuring HWs, which has never applied before.
Joshua proved his chin is better than I thought it was, yesterday night. He took some big shots last night against a big puncher.
There was no knock down there. The real question was "what the hell is an olympic medalist doing in the ring with a guy like that?".
Dempsey,Louis, Ali, Holmes, Wlad. All dominant champions who all were knocked down or even stopped before or during their dominance. So Joshua got tagged and wobbled, so f****** what he came through it and fought back.
