Anthony Joshua = Frank Bruno 2.0?

Remember Jumbo Cummings rocking Bruno early on, that was one of his riskier opponents when not in a title fight. Whyte checked Joshua's chin also, thing about these huge guys if you rock them you have to capitalise quickly.

 

AJ doesn't just have the physical tools but he also seems to have great mental strength. When he was rocked and things went south against Whyte, he manage to calm down (credit to his corner as well) and instead of trying to be stubborn and reckless try to KO Whyte, he decided to go back to his boxing, which lead to the impressive KO.

This and the interview shows that AJ has a good head on his shoulders; he's confident, he feels he can overcome any challenge but that it will take time and he's still growing.

It's not just his physical gifts or his charisma that have people on his hype train.

Anyway, I don't think he'll be a "good but not great" like Bruno but will actually have a great career.

 

He's a slow footed gasbag like Bruno but he does puts his punches together much better. His jab isn't in the same league yet.

 

I thought he looked pretty panicked to be honest.

 

He did initially - as what happens to boxers who get rocked for the first time - but he didn't do a David Price but instead he manage to stop pancaking , adjust his gameplan and take out Whyte eventually. His corner deserves credit but so does AJ.

 

He should also credit Whyte for not swarming him with shots when he should have emptied the tank.

 

Should, could, would, but didn't. A moot point to dwell on :|

 

It's an insult to Bruno as Joshua has yet to defeat a ranked contender

Rewatch the fight, the so called early knock down wasn't, and in both fights he finished on his feet.

It looked like Wythe only managed to connect with one powerful shot. Joshua was able to lean back and avoided the following punches from Wythe. And Wythe looked gassed at that point, he just couldn't continue.

It reminded me of Vitali-Sanders a little bit.

 

Yes.... And it's not necessarily a bad thing. Bruno was no bum.

 

AJ has excellent raw material and he is improving. I think he is more a Joe Louis type a bit like Lennox Lewis. I like his spirit and he enjoys fighting. Behind the gentleman facade he is a nasty piece of work and I mean that as a compliment. He responded to Whyte's provocation where it matters in the ring and ended it conclusively.
