I agreed with the stoppage. If there is one thing I hate its a 'brave cornerman'. Full credit to Pascal. Huge courage by Spike. Those punches werent brainbusters when taken individually, but that is exactly the type of sustained beating that does a lot more harm than a clean ko. But dont you feel it just seems a bit odd that after all that training he only had 4 rounds of boxing in him? 4 Rounds? In a fight that was basically a wild shootout - which you would have said going in would suit Spike? (Realistically he was no longer competitive in rounds 5-6-7.) He inexplicably abandoned his jab - which was working well for him in the first couple of rounds. He didnt abandon body-punching - he never started it in the first place. That could have worked for him. He has success with the left hook, but then abandoned everything else and went left-hook crazy.....apart from incredible guts and toughness it was a very limited performance by Spike. Maybe Eubank is just that good? Maybe we over-rated Spikes chances....I dunno....He never seemed to get going in the fight, maybe he overtrained?
I think spike is a bit on the small side for a middleweight, I personally would like to see him try his luck at light middle
I agree about the size thing. He was a light - middle for most of his career. Mind you he doesnt lack for strength. Eubank is a very big middleweight and he didnt boss Spike around physically. I feel that Spike lacks the speed athleticism and skill to be top level. A bit harsh, I know...but there is only so far you can go on guts and toughness and a bit of power. If there was nothing wrong with Spike the other night - if that was a true reflection of his level -- then maybe he should 'consider his position' as they say....wrong business to be in if you're not good enough. There was something sad about watching those last 3 rounds the other night...
I don't think anyone overated spike on here bar yourself Len,the people he beat weren't up to much and as iv'e been saying for ages you can only judge a fighter when he moves up in grade, spike just isn't a top grade middleweight,Jnr might be,has still to be tested in top company so i'm not convinced yet. As for the great one,he has proven his worth in top level and heres hoping for a good defence of his belt in Manchester Sat.night, heard someone talking about the 12 pubs in Manchester, here we go!!!!!!!!!!
Lee's going to have to make it decivise on Saturday, as you could get some home cooking going in BJS favour.
Billy wont need that.....heres a thought - maybe Spike & Andy can get together and open a gym down south? They'll both be looking for something to do after Christmas.
No Dutchie - I made Eubank favourite - I only ever regarded Spike as a live underdog: Which practically everyone on here agreed with. Both were unproven - both. So for that very reason, it was impossible to accurately rate either. (as you say yourself). But as I say, I am surprised Spike had only 4 rounds of boxing in him - that shocked me. Wish him all the best for his future - what a brave man.
Len,you have been raving on here for weeks about how good spike was and typical your heading for cover, you did the same with Andy in his last 3 fights,we all have our favourites and when we take away the bull**** the one thing is you can only judge a boxer by who he boxes and how he gets on,not by what we hope and believe, that's where the similarities between spike and Andy finish,Andy has proven himself in top company and spike hasn't,I wish spike could have moved up to top level but alas,Andy will prove you wrong again on Saturday, and if he doesn't knock him out he will outbox him with his jab,he doesn't get enough credit for his boxing skills, and please don't come on here Monday len talking rubbish that you privately fancied Andy to win,it won't wash,Andy will get all the respect that he deserves after the weekend.
Calm down Dutchie - read my posts on this very page - I fully accept that Spike is not a great boxer. Im not denying it for a second. I just thought Eubanks habit of standing in close and hooking would give Spke a chance, thats all. Mind you Eubank didnt come out of it covered in glory either, you know. If anything Spike was actually not rocked by single punches, just seriously pounded on with volume. Eubank was rocked several times in the first 3-4 rounds by single shots - several left hooks and at least one right hand seemed to trouble him, albeit momentarily ,and credit to him he recovered well each time. If Spike had been able to string some decent combos together, who knows? Thats 2 fights in a row where Eubank hit his man with literally everything he had and couldnt put him down or even wobble him, and these werent elite guys either, Spike and Chudinov. That little problem doesnt bode well for him if/when he moves up in class and/or weight...... No ducking and diving from me - Billy Joe on points this weekend. (In case you forgot - Billy Joe has already beaten both Spike and CEJ handily)
Looking back the complete silence from Spikes stablemate Lukekiko on here in the run-up to the Eubank fight probably should have given us a hint of what was to come.....
I think people just built up Spike to be something hes not, or never was. I always saw Spike as a good, exciting regional level fighter. His KO of Fitzy caused some people to run away with themselves.
I'd totally agree with this, good tough domestic fighter but nothing more, We have had a bit of it recently,Ormonde,o kane, hogan,Upton have all been beaten with step ups,not saying they shouldn't keep looking for the bigger fights but maybe we should be more realistic with our expectations,
Speak of the devil! I thought you'd be all over this fight like a rash: Where you been? Actually you've just given me an idea for a new (better) nickname for Luke: "Silent but Violent". Luke "Silent but Violent" Keeler!! It just might work.
