I'm not saying that's how it would turn out, but it would be an equally stupid, overly large leap in competition. Price's best opponents were fringe top 30-35 hws like Audley Harrison, then matched against a fringe top 10 hw in Thompson who everyone oddly thought was shot. Joshua's best opponents were fringe top 30-35 opponents like Johnson, then it appears his next opponent will be a fringe top 10 hw everyone oddly thinks is shot in Chisora. Too much too soon. Maybe it will turn out well for him, but its much too risky and there is no need. And unlike with Price, Joshua has struggled a bit with one of his opponents, in White (whose best win is Brian Minto!). He should fight a durable, light hitting top 25 guy like Duhaupas, then a weak chinned technician top 15 guy like Scott or Cunningham, then someone like Chisora. Then a final eliminator for a belt. If he made a good fast pace he could have all those fights under his belt by January 2017, with diverse experience and confidence heading into a title fight.
Chisora is shot and not hard hitting at all, if AJ can't beat Chisora or Duhaupas right now he should retire.
The big difference is Price is gun shy. IF Aj throws in combination as he does Price will just hold his hands up. Plus he's been sparked out a couple of times and I think AJ would be able to take him out. Price hasn't show terrifc ability to box and use his height and reach to his advantage. It will be a long way back for him.
Just don't see Derek having the skills or size to ambush Joshua like Thompson did to Price. That said, Joshua's chin is officially on the suspect list.
Hits harder, yeah. Otherwise, I highly doubt it. He certainly hasn't proven it, his best win was against Brian Minto. Chisora is criminally underrated on this board. He's beaten several top 15 opponents and given the best in the division problems. He's only (legitimately) lost to past, present, and future world title holders. Thompson's only win over a top 15 hw at the time of facing Price was against an old Krasniqi. Chisora is the much more proven fighter at the same point in their careers. I think Joshua is a lot better than Price, and that he'll beat Chisora. But its sloppy matchmaking on Hearns part.
Except he's a legit fringe top 10 hw with quality wins over several top 15 hws. It would decisively prove Joshua is a top 10 hw, which, with his wins over sub top 30 guys in Whyte and Johnson, he hasn't done yet.
I think you're underestimating Whyte. I've no way to prove it in terms of resume but I think he's definitely top 15 while Joshua is top 10.
Good post. Maybe. If he proves it later on then this won't be in effect, but right now, all that's on Whytes resume is that he was challenging to Joshua
Leap up for Joshua? :huh I made a Whyte vs. Chisora thread just the other day and people were saying that Whyte is essentially a superior (not merely younger & fresher) version of Chisora and/or that Chisora is too far gone to compete at that level anymore. Respondents on the poll overwhelmingly favored Whyte. http://www.boxingforum24.com/showthread.php?t=554917 How could it be a leap up for Joshua if he just beat someone that everybody considers a superior version of this "leap up" (and picks to beat him if they met h2h)?
I don't think Chisora is shot physically but mentally he took a huge blow in losing to Fury the way he did. He hasn't been in the same physical shape we saw him in when he fought Vitali, gave Helenius a scare and convincingly beating the likes of Scott and Johnson. If he shows up in shape it's a definite step up in class, if he shows up 20lbs overweight he will basically gas after a few rounds like Whyte did but lack the power to even hurt AJ like Whyte did, so would then be another walkover. Also I don't get the comparions between Chisora and Whyte. They don't fight in a similar style at all. Whyte has a good jab, Chisora barely throws his, Whyte is a puncher, Chisora is not, Whyte has terrible stamina, a fit Chisora will not gas, Whyte prefers to fight at long and mid range, Chisora likes to get inside and fight in close. They are very different fighters so Chisora represents a very different challenge.
I agree with that assessment. Chisora is not that good nowadays, was pretty dangerous to top 10 fighters in 2012 though.
When was Chisora considered good? He never really beat anyone. He was competitive with relatively unknown fresh fighters but he was never a top ten fighter. His is extremely limited in almost every way. Just because he goes life and death with some of the local british fighters doesn't make him world class
