Wow, I just found this thread and I absolutely agree. Ottke was severely underrated and his defense was beyond a doubt superior to his contemporaries at the time. He truly was a "slow motion" fighter, meaning that I find that watching replays and aspects of his fight game in slow motion displays the nuances of his defense.
Sven Ottke is #5 on my ATG 168 list, the 21 title defense + the KO win vs prime Undefeated Mundine :smoke #1 Roy Jones Jr. Dominating 44-0 ATG James Toney can't be denied #2 Andre Ward. His win over Carl Froch forces #2 #3 Carl Froch. Fought & Beat every man he faced faced except Ward #4 Joe Calzaghe. Impressive 21 WBO Title defenses reign 1998-2007 #5 Sven Ottke. Impressive 21 IBF Title defenses reign 1998-2004 #6 Steve Collins. Iron Chin, bigger heart, defeated Benn & Eubank #7 Chang Park. First dominant champion at 168, 1984-1988 #8 Nigel Benn. Big heart, loss and draw with Eubank, hurting G Man #9 Chris Eubank. 1-0-1 on paper with Benn, older times kept on fighting 10 James Toney. Iran Barkely win & taking RJ beatdown like a man
ottke had good stamina /great leg movement ( his best asset ) awkward amatuer style / he was hard to nail clean and tied up on the inside. for a fighter with no punch at all to win 34-0 is a testament to his hit and not be hit style. my major gripe with him is not aimed at him but at sauerland home advantage he boxed in huge rings where his legs could get him out of being cornered /the refs were always lenient to his fouls which he did a lot and the biggest no no was that they had a camera above the ring that looked down on the judges scores and ottke was always kept apprised of the scorecards so if he was ahead with 2 rounds to go he would would simply circle /not throwing a single punch but not getting hit or taking a chance. thats why there are so many 115-113 type scores on his resume.
i have never seen another boxer at 168 and above who was able to move so fast and keep balance. funny his legspeed was faster than his handspeed.
Thats a fair comment. I have said before that Ottke would outbox many of todays top SMWs due to his great movement and although he wasnt a big puncher he wasnt weak when up close. By all means disagree if you dont agree, but a while back in a debate I favoured Ottke to have out pointed Froch due to styles. I just dont think Froch would have been able to have worked out Ottkes style and think he would have been out boxed
ottke had a horrible style for froch , he would only engage froch 3 or 4 times a round and froch does not have the footspeed to corner him, but froch has power and size, only brewer i can think of/just thought of mads larson as well who were built like froch. brewer won the first fight , i watched it at the timight could e/ottke fought well in the remat h and there was no dispute/ mads larson was close/not much happened from memory i remember tom johnson litterally tearing his hair out (not that he had any)in frustration in the later rounds frustrated at ottkes moving. i think in germany ottke points in uk they would put him in a smaller ring /tough ref . ottke had a very hard style to beat i think calzaghe wins points v ottke mndines handspeed gave him problems and he had to actually chase mundine and sit down on his punches , only saw him do that a few times.
that's a pretty good list that aggregates accomplishment with ability. Even though roy did little at smw really, his abilities are so far above the others at present (until we get some more amazing SMWs in the future anyway) that it more than caters for his lesser accomplishments in the division. To be fair, there hasn't been enough real ATGs to make a top ten list for SMWs in the short time the division has been around. Ottke should be lower though. way too much fakery. perhaps eubank should be above him and joe.
Waiting for you top 10 list :think I went thru my list again & I didn't see anything wrong standing out, maybe because you didn't specifically point out where the #s were wrong, all I sensed was an emotional impulse from you...which I usually dismiss as just that :smoke #1 Roy Jones Jr. Dominating 44-0 ATG James Toney can't be denied #2 Andre Ward. His win over Carl Froch forces #2 #3 Carl Froch. Fought & Beat every man he faced faced except Ward #4 Joe Calzaghe. Impressive 21 WBO Title defenses reign 1998-2007 #5 Sven Ottke. Ottke was a one paced home town hero light punching joke of a fighter.hid away in Germany with friendly refs and judges if he was upright at the finish he won .was only the champ in his back yard stayed away from anyone dangerous and picked up the pay .no one in the rest of the world was interested in him which is why he went on so long ATG not a chance not even the best at s/m in Europe.total joke.
