Most over- and underrated non-heavyweights on this forum?

In fact Hagler's career would likely have been worse without those early losses against proven, experienced opponents. He otherwise wouldn't have developed the skill and indeed toughness that made him so great in his prime. I don't remember who said it, but some old fighter said the best way to improve a fighter's defence is a loss.

 

underrated---the boxer tyes that tended to do WBO fights; Erdei/Nazarov/Michaelczewski/Eubank/JC Gomez/Gregorian. Most folks have hardly seen any of their efforts & that's a lot of title defenses we are talking about collectively.

Over rated---whomever HBO was pushing big. Oscar/Jones/Bowe/Mosely

 

Nah you never really heat people gush about him. He was 44-1 going into the Duran fight and had beaten a half dozen solid guys, including the next best lightweight in the world (twice). He's the definition of very, very good but not great.

 

Gomez was wbc

 

Joe Calzaghe fits the bill on both. His naysayers claim he was "Calslappy" even though he was undefeated and deny his greatness even though he had insane workrate, ring intelligence, underrated footwork, good chin and terrific handspeed. His supporters will somehow claim that he's one of the greatest lightheavies ever even though his resume consists of shot to **** Roy Jones and overrated as well as feather fisted at 175 Bernard Hopkins. This is an obvious choice.

 

Actually I believe it was you who said Mayweather could beat him with one hand tied behind his back, (or something to that effect)

Besides the Duran fight, what other fights have you seen of his?

 

I think Ward is getting underrated. I think I'd put his talent level above Pacquiao's.

 

Underrated

Jones Jr.- Does not get nearly enough credit for whipping 28 year old Hopkins and schooling Toney. He just doesn't get enough credit for it.

Vitali- it's a shame he doesn't have standout wins. But he was truly unique. Such incredible stamina for a guy his size.

Erik Morales- Does not get enough credit for being only man to defeat prime Pacquiao. Does not get enough credit for being at one time 48-2 with only two losses being to MAB.

Overrated

Calzaghe- is a self admitted defeatist. How ridiculous is that?

Tommy Hearns- is no doubt an ATG fighter. But had noticeable flaws in chin and stamina. Is not as great he's hyped.

Mike Tyson- The old saying "Who did he actually beat" is so applicable to Mike Tyson. Honestly who did this man beat? I don't think he's an ATG.

Edit- I should have read the thread title more clearly. It explicitly states non heavyweights...

 

As of right now I think Pac is underrated. Especially his wins at 140+ is quite underrated through ridicolous nitpicking.

If someone before the fact had said that he would not just beat but destroy DLH, Hatton, Cotto and Margarito it would have beeen laughed at as an absurd fantasy, but since his losses to Marquez it has been fotgotten just how out of this world those wins were at the time.

I also think it's quite silly to pretend Jones only beat tomato cans. Hopkins and Toney were anything but and he beat quite a few decent contenders to go along with them.

It's absurd for anyone to say Pacquiao was an overrated fighter.

 

Is it? He had a large contingent expecting him to beat Mayweather.

 

Irrelevant. Pacquiao is the only fighter I know of who has past prime losses held against him to a large magnitude.

The problem with people who got wrapped up into the May-Pac fight was that they actually convinced themselves that it was a relevant fight historically. When Pacquiao hadn't had a KO in 6 years and had shown serious signs of slowing down. Fans actually thought the fight mattered in 2015.
