I've seen people rank Ali in the top 5 P4P, and I have to ask why. Is it because of his resume? Because, he got away with a lot of fundamental mistakes due to his speed, especially for a HW.

No heavyweight should be within spitting distance of fifth p4p.

Not even the great one (whom I rate, incidentally, 2nd at heavy after Bomber Joe)

Top 10-15 would be fair, he's the most accomplished fighter in what's considered the marquee division of the sport.

That's fair yes. And not a knock on him in the least. Think about the company that puts him in. People just want to believe he belongs even higher because of the whole "iconic" thing - but really no serious film historian puts Marilyn anywhere near the 5 greatest actresses in the filmed Era (let alone of all time)...nor do serious music scholars believe Elvis was the most gifted instrumentalist of his generation, let alone GOAT.

Being iconic and being the best at your thing are different. It feels weird to have to state that.

Who would you rank ahead of Ali P4P?

I'm on board with this. Having watched Ali since I was a child, I think his charisma and what he accomplished outside of the ring, seems to factor into his rating inside the ring, at least that's my opinion. That said, he's still a great boxer but I think top 5 P4P is a bit over the top.

To what extent? Top 40? I think Ali lower than maybe dozenth p4p (or 2nd @ HW) is as unreasonable as putting him at #1...

How many have won more fights for an undisputed world title? Is there anyone besides Louis?

Nope, I don't believe so. That can't be a sole criteria for p4p GOAT, however. (or is that not what you're driving at?)

You're talking about a specific division, as opposed to a p4p ranking. Nobody is going to rank Ali worse than 2nd in the heavyweight division, but what does that equate to on a p4p basis?

Stylistically, Howard Davis, Jr. was the closest thing to Ali I saw in the lower weights when I followed boxing. Howard was a vegetarian who had neither the punch, punch resistance or physical strength of Ali. For a speedster at that weight who possessed those attributes, you can have Camacho.

Just some random ideas of what a mature Ali might have been like at a lower height and weight.
