I'm sorry, I thought you were using pre the way some people use literally. Anyway my list is exactly the same only with different names.
Although looking back I need to rethink my ranking of Ketchel, might not change it but I do need to rethink it.
Can't believe I left Gibbons off. Anyone think that Frank Klaus has an argument here? Draw with Ketchel, wins over Jack Sullivan, Billy Papke, Frankie Mantell, Jimmy Gardner, Cyclone Johnny Thompson, Porky Dan Flynn, multiple over Jack Dillon, Leo Houck, Georges Carpentier and Eddie McGoorty before the wheels fell off. That's a damn good resume.
I would rank Klaus sightly ahead. He beat Papke over 6 and several of Klaus' better victims beat Papke. KO'ing Ketchel- despite whatever shenanigans took place- is still a pretty good bonus, tho.
Pre 1950. I might tinker with this a bit. 1. Greb 2. Fitzsimmons 3. Cerdan 4. Walker 5. Lamotta 6. Zale 7. Burley 8. Ketchel 8. Ryan 9. Steele 10. Papke ( moved him up after seeing him crush Carpentier ) HM Flowers, Darcy, McCoy, Gibbons, Williams, Langford, Clarke. Was 1900-1950, better than 1951- 2000?
There is no way under the Lord's yellow orb that you can rate Cerdan over Steele. They aren't really in the same league. And I still hold that Klaus is better than Papke. That said, I'm not entirely confident regarding the ordering in my list.
