    Actually yes, it is.

Whitaker was well past his sell-by date and a coke head by the time of the de la Hoya fight. Wright, OTOH, would go undefeated for the next *7* years after the Vargas loss. Over those seven years, Wright would beat Mosley [who beat Ole' Fishnets] and Trinidad [who ALSO beat Whitaker and Ole Fishnets].

    Try again, Genius...

Except that many observers, myself included, don't believe Vargas deserved the W against Winky in the first place.

That sir is beside the point. The same can be said of de la Hoya's win over Whitaker. The record books have de la Hoya over Whitaker and Vargas over Wright - so that's what I'm dealing with here...

So the head-to-head fight between DLH and Vargas doesn't factor in?

If you want to say Jacobs' win over Quillin was better than any individual win GGG has had to date, I can buy that. Jacobs beat a bigger name than anyone GGG has faced and did so in decisive and dramatic fashion.

But if you want to say that Vargas' win over Winky is better than any win DLH ever had? You're stretching things quite far as I see it. I can't go along with that.

And for the record, I did personally have Pea beating Oscar and I had Winky beating Vargas.

Not in my mind. Vargas was merely roided up Trinidad leftovers by the time Ole Fishnets got to him. Context is important.

    Agreed.

That's exactly what I'm saying. If you disagree then please tell me what win on de la Hoya's record do you consider to be better than Vargas' win over Wright. I'd love to hear it...

Well, my main point was that Jacobs beat Quillin decisively, impressively, and dramatically. Vargas' "win" over Wright was none of these things, so on principle, I have a difficult time saying wins of that nature are better than anything such and such ever had.

But just to play devil's advocate, DLH's "win" over Sturm was better than Vargas' "win" over Winky.

Sturm was in better standing prior to his fight with DLH than Winky was prior to his bout with Vargas, and Sturm had a better run at the championship level after losing to Oscar than Winky did after losing to Vargas.

Some say he ducked Vargas. Waited for Trinidad to crack Vargas chin before Oscar fought him.

Well there are wins in absolute sense and then wins taking into the consideration how convincingly you won.

For example Pacquiaos split decision victory over Marquez in the 2nd fight is technically a better win than his victory over Cotto. Based solely on quality of opposition. But then when you consider that Pacquiao demolished Cotto in dramatic fashion most consider that a better win than the Marquez win. So I think what you're trying to say is that quality of victory is important just like quality of opposition.
