In theory ,probably yes,but Corbett was ko'd by one body shot from a middleweight ,he would not evade Dempsey's big guns .
He might have had the talent but he didn't have training or technique required. Maybe had he been born in 1890 it would have been feasible.
Yes, by Fitzsimmons who was an all-time hitter. Dempsey, by contrast, was Ko'd in one by Flynn. Corbett also took heavy shots from Peter Jackson and Joe Choynski, and it took a while for Jeffries to track him down in the first fight. Let's not act like he wasn't durable. Dempsey had trouble with quick defensive fighters. Willie Meehan comes to mind. Dempsey's big guns did not hit their mark here . Heck yes, Corbett could outbox Dempsey. If the fight was 8 rounds or less, Corbett has a good chance for a UD. 10-15, I'd favor Dempsey. 20 or more, Dempsey's stamina isn't proven.
How many heavyweight champions have been ko'd by one body punch? Corbett was beaten up by a crude brawler, Sharkey.Dempsey was light years better than Sharkey. Every time a Dempsey thread appears ,you trot out him being stopped by Flynn. What bearing has that on a Dempsey v Corbett fight?:huh When a Fitz thread comes up, are you going to mention him being stopped by Jim Hall? Which quick defensive fighters beat Dempsey when he was prime?
Bringing out the old bromide to diminish Jack Dempsey that he was "ko'd " by Fireman Jim Flynn in 1917 is bogus... There is the problem that Dempsey took a "dive" for do, re, mi, as his wife attested to in their divorce proceedings, or the young Dempsey was still learning the ropes and got caught cold by a veteran Jim Flynn. One or the other. At any event ,one year later under the guise of a new manager Jack Kearns, the maturing Dempsey flattened Flynn in one round to avenge his "loss". At any rate, to illustrate my point I saw a great MW prospect Joey Giardello get flattened by an acquaintance of mine Harold Green in Giardello's 31 bout, and all these decades when discussing Giardello's HOF career this ko loss is NEVER brought up to diminish his HOF career. Dempsey's name on ESB is like a red cape in front of a bull... And then the name Willie Meehan who Dempsey fought four 4 round bouts in which the rotund Meehan got a few decision calls. First off Meehan was called the king of the 4 round bouts in which he also decisioned some chap named Sam Langford is meaningless. He specialized in smothering his opponents in close for this short 4 round distance til he ran out of steam. I am sure there were numerous great champions in history that in many of their bouts was behind the scorecard after the first 4 rounds...MEANINGLESS I say...
They never mention that Dempsey took Flynn out in a round a year later, funny that?:huh Meehan was a short fight specialist he beat Langford over that distance , and Jeff Clark.
Yes he could probably outbox Dempsey for a while, but the end result would probably be that Dempsey caught him and stopped him, as Fitzsimmons and Jeffries did.
Whether is was a kosher fight or not, I don't see how it is relevant to a Corbett v Dempsey matchup to be honest. Perhaps some one could explain it to me?:huh
There is crossover on that line of argument. The case for Corbetts win over McCoy being fixed is based on spousal testimony, as is the case for Flynns win over Dempsey being fixed. You need to decide upon a consistent position, regarding the value of spousal testimony!
