My first thoughts: other than Ali, Robinson and Leonard surely no one is as great as him.

That was back in 2006 ish. Never heard of him before the fight with Baldomir. Watched him against Oscar and Hatton and genuinely thought he was the ****.

Then I came to classic because a) I had no idea why he wasn't a consensus top 5 Atg. B) I had no idea why anyone would rank someone Johnson smashed over Johnson himself (and Mayweather incidentally)

A really, really talented boxer. Up to lightweight his resume was impeccable. You could see how good he was. There was a time, I the early 2000s when everyone was being upset, prospects and veterans, Barrera (the Pac fight was a huge deal), Mosley, Trinidad, Hamed, all within a year of each other. And you kept waiting for the shoe to drop, for Mayweather to pick up an L and he never did.

Anyway the young Mayweather and the current model are fairly different. The younger one was more mobile, abs a much more balanced and threatening offensive force. He had good, not great, power at 130 and combine that with blazing speed and accuracy and he was a real force. It was Beautiful to watch.

Floyd is super skilled. The only problem I have with Floyd is his lack of fighting prime boxers and his bold claim of being TBE. In saying that there is very few fighters who would beat peak Floyd Mayweather. For me Mayweather is a top 25 ATG. Remarkable achievement.

At least you had sense to see the light mate. I've got a good friend who's in love with Mayweather. After Floyd schooled Canelo I got a txt from my friend which read on the lines of "I've never seen a better fighter than Floyd Mayweather, he has speed, skill and power unmatched to anything in history" I ****ed myself laughing and replied "Floyd hasnt knocked anyone out proper since Hatton, mate. Anyway, Duran, Leonard, Hearns and Robinson would've beat Floyd" He then replied "I don't believe so" I don't think he knew what or who I was on about lol

Yeah most people who sign to these forums have a choice to either troll each other ad play fan boy games (general) or have a pretty in depth discussion about retired boxers (classic).

I used to lurk and comment on articles, I remember the build up to Mayweather v JMM I would argue on the comments section about how amazing Floyd was and tbh he is amazing but not amazing enough to be top 5 Atg. To appreciate the present you need to discover the past.

@lufcrazy the knowledge from most of the guys in the classic is ridiculous. You can only learn in here, mate.

larry holmes had a great insight on being TBE .. he goes i'd expect everyone to think they're TBE why wouldn't they? when did self confidence become a crime

I think he should tone it down a bit too but larry has a point

Prior to his career taking off, I really thought that his uncle roger was going to be remembered as the best mayweather. But within a short period of time I was proven wrong.
