You did when you said ****yzing what he did on the ring doesn't really explain anything and that's what I an have issue with cause that invalidates the thread. Most people which have a positive oppinion about Marciano in terms of skill never bother to ****yze what he does. This is the focus of the thread and an interesting subject by my pov.

Actually I said Marciano was not a one punch kayo artist .I now reiterate that . Marciano was a grinder that is my opinion ,and the opinion of Archie Moore.He ground down Lastarza,Moore Charles,****ell ,and he softened up Layne with a steady bombardment until he was ready to go. No contradiction on my part whatsoever. I wonder you can take the constant humiliation you have amassed on the,Monzon, Valdez, and Golovkin threads especially, the jokes at your expense but ,since they seem to fly right over your head I suppose you aren't even aware of it.:-(
Here is how I look at it. The main reason for his lack of failure was his lack of inconsistency in his preparations.
Actually Layne's bubble had been burst in his highly controversial split dec win over Cesar Brion. Plunging and tossing like a rudderless ship, Rex Layne, Lewiston, Utah, heavyweight, somehow or other managed to gain a decision over Cesar Brion, from the Argentine, in ten dull rounds of fighting at Madison Square Garden last night. And if there is any consolation in a moral victory, Brion has it. A crowd of 5,768 booed the verdict and it was plain that many, if not the majority, thought Brion had won. Associated Press: 22-year-old Rex from Utahs sugar beet land failed to live up to the gaudy promise of his Nov. 24 upset over tired old Jersey Joe Walcott". The dec win over Walcott was the only really noteworthy victory Layne had achieved when he went in with Marciano. Walcott had won 5 of his last 8 ,Mr Consistant he wasn't. Layne's other decent wins were over a 180lbs Satterfield who dropped him before his own china chin failed him once again. Bob Dunlap who was one pound over the light hvy limit at176bs ,he had won 4 of his last 8 . The only other win of any note was over a washed up Joe Kahut, who had won 6 of his last 11 fights.
Marciano was hard to hit cleanly as he was all ways pressing in the guys face giving no time to think would not stop throwing non stop hard shots a tireless constant attack elbows 'head 'pounding away at his opponent till he couldn't hold his arms up anymore. The rock was a heart breaker fighters who went into the late rnds with him were never the same after .not pretty to watch but very effective.
Well he was clearly fighting the best opposition available, and weak eras are ten a penny. Simply saying that his era was weak, is not enough to explain his success.

McVey .....that really does not accurately portray Layne as he was thought of during that time. Layne was the fan favorite on TV and was highly thought of. A soso performance vs Brion did not lessen his mass appeal. It was not until Rocky dismantled him that his career went into a tailspin. THEN he fell out of the boxing publics favor. I know a lot of Layne and that time as he was a favorite of my father during the 50's.
It's weird watching him. You think how can this guy hit anyone. He looks slow and tired at times but keeps on throwing. Hard to tell if he was great or just like some say. Over rated. Maybe a little of both.
Always in shape; mentally tough; made the best of his physical characteristics in terms of his style; great chin; great power. I don't think he beats Louis or Ali in their prime and would most likely have trouble with some of the super heavyweights of recent history, i.e., Lewis, Bowe, the Klitschko brothers, but I think he was one of the great heavyweight champions. I would have loved to see a Dempsey vs Marciano fight.
