Who wins this battle between two fast glass-jawed beltholders both of whom were knocked out by Big Daddy Bowe?
That would actually be a hell of a fight, I was a fan of both, I lean toward Seldon, he was a little more fundamentally sound.
Besides Ko losses to Bowe, both stopped an aging Tony Tucker, Seldon on cuts, and Hide KO'd Tony with his left hook. For me it's hard to pick a winner, great fight with 50/50 chances.
Good fight. Another vote for Herbie. Those fast hands come right over the top of those Seldon hands--and that horrible chin straight up in the air defense of his. Herbie punches to 12 o"clock--with either hand and he sure had early snap on those punches--and Seldon gets hit flush. Ko 1 or ko2, maybe if Bruce can climb off the deck and keep getting up.
good match up, top notch hand speed battle. I would pick Hide, I think he may have been a little tougher than Seldon. Both guys were a bit shaky at times so its a tough pick.
Funny, I just watched the Hide Bowe fight for the first time this morning and was surprised by how good and competitive it was. He really rocked Bowe repeatedly, dominated the first two rounds and was thoroughly outboxing Bowe. Then he gassed out in one of the earliest and most inexplicable ways I've ever seen. It reminded me of Wlad Brewster.
Yeah I suppose I have to lean towards Hide. While neither men were known for their durability, Hide at least took a lot more from Bowe than Seldon did. He was also a bit quicker, could box some and might even have had a tad more power. Could be a decent fight for a while though.
With their chins anything could happen but I favour Hide. When you look at common opponents like Bowe, Tucker and Dixon, Hide did better than Seldon each time. Hide hit harder and was quicker and that would be the decider.
Agreed. Unfortunately Hide was a guy who I think had some real potential but never fully capitalized on it.
Hide had great potential, that was the problem; he really had no idea how to box. They asked Emanuel Steward about putting him in with LEwis once and he said something to the effect of: "Herbie Hide does everything wrong in a boxing ring, he even climbs through the ropes wrong."
If someone like Steward had taken him under his wing and combined that with his natural athleticism I think Hide might have had a better career.. His chin and mental resolved would have always prevented him from being a "great fighter", but with the right angles he might have at least been as good as Frank Bruno or perhaps even a tad better.
Really had a weird career. Possessed power and speed but otherwise was clueless. I will also go with Hide over the "Heavyweight Champion of Atlantic City". Seldon had a first-rate jab and was happy to stick to it. But Hide would sooner or later get around it.
