I know Hagler destroyed him, but Marvin was brilliant that night. How would Minter rate in Middleweight history. Who is he comparable to in standing?

Is he on the level of Giardello or Pender? Did you rate him as a boxer, generally?

Appreciate any thoughts, especially from Brits who may have watched him live.

If youl look you look on boxrec you'll see about 10 ko losses but all but 2 were on cuts.he was a sharp puncher and ripped A ntuofermo to bits.
He's probably on a par with Pender but well below Giardello
    He's a recovering alcoholic

I saw Minter a few times including against Hagler ,Tonna, Antuofermo, and Finnegan. He was a good boxer with decent power , a gutsy guy handicapped by suspect skin tissue.
I'd say he was slightly above Pender's level , ,not as good as Giardello, but then I rate Joey highly.

Giardello's footwork vs carter was superb, especially against the ropes.
I think John Conteh was a non drinker till he went away with Minter boxing for Britain.

Cheers for that. I mentioned Pender and Giardello, thinking he was somewhere in between. I like Giardello, too. Nice, relaxed style.

Got to wondering about Minter after watching the Hagler fight( with Harry Carpenter's commentary) on youtube recently. Hagler was right on his game that night!

Minter was better than Hagler made him look. That was a special performance.

I was at a dinner show when somebody asked Alan "I thought you beat Hamsho, if you got the decision would you have fought Hagler again?" Straight away Alan answered. "No not Hagler, You must be Fukking joking!"

Roughly where I'd rate him too.

I never knew about the alcoholism but it explains why he looks a bit rough in some of his recent pics.

His fights with Kevin Finnegan were real wars !

I thought he was quite good and is now a bit overlooked. Awkward enough, strong, good power.......there's a lot there. I did think Hamsho edged him, and Hagler treated him like a baby treats a diaper, but if his skin held up he'd be terrible to deal with.

Agree on somewhere in between. Definitely not on Giardello's level, although I really feel G is a bit underrated. Very good, but not flashy so goes overlooked a good bit.

Alan was a very good, reasonably clever, sturdy fighter, and may have been as good as or better than Paul Pender, but he was nowhere near as good as Joey Giardello. Joey was a self taught, bonafide ring wizard...no comparison. I esteem Giardello very highly.

Yes...good point turpinr...I rate Monzon...and have for years, as a matter of fact...as the greatest middleweight champ,..and I think Giardello would have given him a very good fight.

Giardello made a mug of hurricane Carter, especially with his back to the ropes.it was boxing at its best.

I'm pretty impressed by alan. He was a strong good middle. In his prime he was well above a lot of middle champs. I think the Hagler fight took a lot out of him and he was never the same. I am in a minority though when I say I believe he DID win at 12 of the rounds against Antuafermo.
I thought he out boxed and punched him easily in the first fight.
