Marciano vs Ali: Great fight or mismatch?

Jones, Cooper, Chuvalo, Frazier (obviously), even Patterson.


He just had issues with this type of fighter!


That is not to say that he would win, but if you take a similar fighter who was better than all of them, arguably including Frazier, then isn’t it fair to say that we have a fight on?

 

Chuvalo was not small. Cooper was a standup boxer who fought behind his jab.Patterson is arguable ,the only one of those 4 is Jones.
Not fit to lace Marciano's gloves?
Jones,Patterson,Chuvalo would give Marciano good fights.

 

Janitor I think describing Chuvalo and Frazier as small pressure fighters when they were each 20 or 30 pounds heavier than Marciano seems wrong.
And I wouldn't call what Patterson have Ali as trouble although it was admirable. And Cooper wasn't really a pressure fighter.

The entire media predicted a stoppage on cuts when the Bayonne Bleeder became the first title challenger of Ali's second reign. Part of the legend behind that one is the lack of blood, and how close Wepner got to the final bell. He was then 35 years old, loaded with scar tissue, and skin is not as resilient and cut resistant anyway as one gets older. At the end, Ali had the necessary power to put him down for what would have been a full count if Tony Perez hadn't waved it off at seven (and Chuck had a terrific chin).

Antuofermo-Hagler was widely expected to be stopped by Vito's chronic bleeding, and EVERYBODY KNEW for an absolute fact that Minter-Antuofermo I was going to be the bloodiest title fight in the history of color television. Vito's string of three championship distance bouts against Corro, Hagler and Minter was one of the most shocking streaks in the last 50 years of boxing. No way he has 45 consecutive rounds of action against that trio without cuts being a factor, yet none of them was decided by bleeding.

 

Complete mismatch. In every regard. Liston Marciano would even be a mismatch to me and Ali beat him quite easily

 

Both the Hagler and Minter rematches resulted in Antuofermo being stopped on cuts. Antuofermo was cut in the first round against Hagler.

I was ringside when Antuofermo fought Minter in London ,his face was a mask of blood.

But outside of Henry Cooper, who was basically cut to the bone by every fighter he ever fought, who else did he actually cuts at top level - I know he stopped Quarry on a cut was there anyone else?

 

That last quote makes most sense to me "appearing more gory than it was" :good

 

None of them out-boxed him though. Neither was Ali prime for Jones, Cooper ,or Frazier.

 

You said aside from the second Charles fight
Marciano was never in danger of being stopped on cuts,I gave two other examples .

It's your prerogative to deny reality if you so choose.
