Where do you have Azumah Nelson rated....

on your all time featherweight list?

 

10 at fw and number 56 atg.

He was incredible. A brilliant counter puncher, very tricky to nail and he had fight changing power.

I rank him slightly behind Juan Manuel Marquez by a **** hair.

 

Would you take JMM head to head over Nelson as well?

 

I wouldn't bet money on him, my hunch is he would come out on top, I have very little between two.

Why would you rate JMM over Nelson??? Marquez though a great fighter is not greater than Nelson.

 

Well Nelson was only really mastered by Sanchez and Whitaker.

Marquez was only really mastered by Mayweather.

Nelson knocked out a past prime Gomez and Marquez knocked out a past prime Pacquiao. Nelson beat Fenech, Marquez beat Barrera.

There really isn't a lot between them imo. Marquez had a hell of a lot of close fights and sometimes he got the decision and sometimes he didn't. He was a defensive genius who made himself more aggressive to chase a bigger payday.

Really similar ability wise but I guess I like the Pacquiao stoppage more than the Gomez stoppage.

 

JMM also lost a wrestling match to Freddie Norwood and was outboxed by Chris John at 126.

 

Nelson was a brilliant fighting machine could do the lot box and fight hit hard excellent chin very good boxing brain the complete package. Very few at feather could match him top 5 of all time .

 

He lost two very close fights that easily could have gone his way. As I said he had lots of close fights in his career.

 

Marquez just came up a little short in his biggest fights. Kind of like how DLH did who lost his 3 biggest fights.

He's still an ATG though. But I think Nelson is greater.

Coming up short no matter how razor thin is still not a win. Is it better than getting blown out but it's not winning.

By far Marquez's biggest legacy fights were Pac I and Pac II. He arguably won those fights but he did not come away with an actual victory. Thus he came up a little short which would become a patter through his career.

Then you have that next level of fights. Norwood, Barrera, Pac III, Pac IV. He lost to Norwood. The Mexican press was ready to put him with Morales and Barrera. He lost. Most people think he lost to a slightly faded Barrera. He Did actually lose to a slightly faded Pacquiao. Which could have gone either way. And then finally got a KO victory over a faded, but still dangerous Pacquiao.
