If it is backed by a primary source, and certain key people saw it, then we have to at least take it seriously. The story likely got better with the retelling of course, they generally do!
There are some interesting historic bar fights, that are backed by primary sources. John L and Herbet Slade got into a s****, and Slade took him to the floor, and sat on him until the police arrived. Young Griffo sparked Jim Corbett in a bar fight, though it sounds like a bit of a fluke.
Yep and Jeffries who wasn't in shape or ready for the blow was up In An instant IF the story is true. Sullivan himself said he'd have no chance vs Jeffries.
Obviously you have looked at the sources, and set out to assess their value, as evidence. What is your take?
John L just keeps going higher on the bada** scale! Pretty impressive for a drunk fat 48 year old. Jeffries would've been retired for a year here.
Corbett gave his share of BS and the thread starter has an agenda. The two make a fine match. I tend to doubt this. Sullivan and Jeffries were on friendly terms in 1910. Had Sullivan did this he isn't invited to camp to watch Jeffries, as such a cowardly act would not easily be forgiven so quickly. If you saw John L hit a bag in 1910 he's terrible. Beyond shot.
Is there any press story? Corbett made stuff up. What other sources are the besides some drunks in a bar? I would not rule the possibility out. I doubt it through.
Jeffries via Corbett refused Sullivan entry to the training camp because Sullivan said," it looks like a frame up". The public reconciliation was for publicity and affected by Choynski
Wouldnt this have been just after John L Sullivan Challenged Jeffries to a unification bout and knocked out McCormack? If so, i thought he went off the drink around about this time didnt he?
