I know this has been done and I searched the forum but the threads I found were old. So, as both of these guys are geezers, I feel as if the time is right. RJJ seems to be damaging his legacy. Hopkins ahs only helped his and plans to have 1 more fight (a title fight) before he calls it quits. B-Hop: 55-7-2 - 2 division champ (MW and LHW) - 20 consecutive MW title defenses - Oldest champion in history at 49 - Wins over Trinidad, Glen Johnson, DLH, Tarver, Wright, Pavlik, Pascal, and RJJ (shot). RJJ: 62-9 - 4 division champ (MW, SMW, LHW, HW) - Only fighter aside from Bob Fitzsimmons to win titles at MW and HW. - Took 51 fights to truly be beaten. - Wins over Hopkins, Tarver, Toney, McCallum, Trinidad, Ruiz, Hill, and Castro. Who do you believe has the greater legacy?
Hopkins passed him years ago..and Roy is a 4 division title holder not champion as he was never lineal..Hopkins is a 2 weight lineal champion
Most people will pick Bernard at this point. Bernard is seen as the incredible 50 year old who took on a monster in Kovalev, whereas Roy's just been knocked out by Enzo Mac. Bernard's longevity is incredible, but all things considered, I think Roy has the better legacy. He achieved more.
Bernard hasn't achieved more than Roy, but he's stayed at the top for much longer. Although that's an achievement in itself, I don't think it's enough.
Bhop has freakish longevity, but he's not at RJJ's level. His best wins, Tarver, Pavlik, Pascal, and Trinidad, are not as impressive as Roy's: Hopkins, Toney, Hill and Ruiz. Even giving extra credit for his age and longevity is not enough IMO to make up the difference. And if we add in the head-to-head comparison of the prime versions of both, the gap widens even more.
RJJ Hopkins by far has set the bar for longevity at a high level but he would never have been able to move up and beat a Heavyweight Champion. Roy Jones getting sparked several times past his prime does not impact what he did moving to heavy at his peak. We probably won't see that again in our lifetimes.
