Yes I know Dempsey was one of the biggest superstars in the history of boxing, but based on his resume and achievements as HW champion, not his popularity and superstar status, where do you rank him all-time?

No ATG top ten is legitimate without Dempsey on the list. One of the most talented fighters to ever hold the hwt championship.

Pretty sure no one looks to you for legitimacy so I guess we have nothing to worry about :good

    Lewis
    Wladimir Klitschko
    Tyson
    Holyfield
    Holmes
    Ali
    Foreman
    Frazier
    Rocky
    Louis

These fighters are all greater than Dempsey, without question. They have accomplished more in the sport and are better fighters. Even if you don't think some of the names on that list belong, you still have Johnson, Liston, Jeffries and maybe Vitali Klitschko and Rid**** Bowe that deserve to be put in front of him. Fact is, he had a weak reign characterized by inactivity and poor opposition. He failed to meet his best challengers. And quite frankly, from what I've seen, he just isn't as good of a fighter as he's made out to be. It's quite hilarious how people put the opposition of Holmes, or Tyson, or even Louis under scrutiny, but I almost never see the steaming pile of **** that is Dempseys resume called out.

    He does not belong.

ONLY on ESB forum is Dempsey so highly underrated H2H folks, only on ESB. Throw away all the accolades from great fighters, trainers, boxing writers who saw him at his best, and raved about his talents as a tremendous rough and tough offensive fighter . Why, what do those people who saw him fight know ?
After all "we 90 years later know better " they claim... Sadly are they WRONG...

    :good

Just compare Holmes' opposition and reign to Dempsey.
Norton alone is a better win than any win on Jack's resume.

:good when I first saw Dempsey beating Jess Willard up I could not believe and decided I wouldn't take any notice of what Nat Fleischer said ever again.

It sounds absolutely unbelievable now, but long time ago many boxing historians ranked Dempsey OVER Louis

So it's wrong to say Dempsey is not among the 10 best ever? There are fighters now who weren't even alive when a lot of these fighters, trainers and writers were around back then.

What about 30 years from now, are we not allowed to rank any future HW fighers above Jack because he was once rated top 5?

Time has given better perspective to what was a very successful show biz reign as champ but one that lacked substance. Still a great fighter, better, more daring fighters have built better resumes in the decades since. It is only natural that he move down in the rankings
