Louis was floored ten times during his professional career. He was 33 and older at the times of the last five KDs, and those came at the hands of HOF fighters.

His first two KDs were against Max Schmeling, who had noticed a subtle flaw in Louis' style and trained obsessively for months to exploit the flaw. Part of Max's strategy was based on surprising an overconfident Louis early in the fight. It took four rounds until he was able to land the payoff right hand to shake Joe, and it took a couple more to put him down. Still, he jumped back up and continued on. (His corner would admonish him for not taking a longer count to clear his head.) It has been said that Joe never fully recovered from that 4th round, but in Schmeling's autobiography he states that Louis was in great condition and came roaring back in the next couple of rounds. Max kept on landing right hands. He said that he noticed that Joe's punches seemed to start losing steam. Max kept grinding away and finally put him down for the count in the 12th round. Schmeling landed something like 90 hard right hands during the course of the fight.

Braddock, Galento, and Buddy Baer scored flash knockdowns from which Joe got up and went on to stop his opponent.

Buddy Baer had a near 80% ko record ,after being floored by his hook Louis got up and calmly went about his business.

I've lost count of how many times I have watched that fight. It showcased all of Louis's qualities, chin included.
