I think that there's more vitriol aimed at Tyson in the thread about his being in the top ten than there is at Dempsey in this one, frankly. That comes with the territory of top ten at heavyweight. I am interested in the numbers this thread is doing though.

Basically the people voting think that Dempsey belongs outside the ten, as a majority.

"being old . . . it does have benefits."

    It also beats the alternative.

Rez, thanks for your insight...By and large I feel like an outcast by many on this forum who think being called "an old white guy" is a compliment...I am on other sites where posters have respect, yes even for older white guys like Me and millions of others who have supported equal rights for all when these posters who use this demeaning term,
were filling up their diapers...would these brave posters use the term
"angry old black men" repeatedly on ESB ? We know the answer. HELL NO.. Thanks again my friend...I may be oulddd, but I still know right from wrong...cheers R...

Throughout history the experts of the time KNOW great fighters when they see them. Dempsey is an ATG fighter because those that watched him live from ringside saw the attributes of AT greatness. To say he does not belong on a list comprising ATG hwt champions is hogwash. You cannot alter written very well known history. It's a done deal. Sam Langford stated "Dempsey is the greatest hwt I have ever seen". That's as great an expert opinion as any in all of boxing history.

    This is just drivel.

Sure, guys who were raised on Corbett and Jeffries and Hart, and who found Johnson either too safety first or too black, probably did see Dempsey as a revelation and held to that belief throughout their lives in spite of more scientific, more talented and more accomplished heavyweights taking the top rung of the division. It's only natural they would associate their youth, their prime with the advent of the greatest heavyweight champ.

And Dempsey is an All Time Great. I am not even arguing against that. I just don't find him in my top ten based on his in the ring results, not some nostalgic mongering fantasies.

we should disqualify the views of white guys. :good
I'd actually extend that to "suspected white guys" too, for example on this forum. I suspect a few white guys lurking here.

White guy lurker here. I have Dempsey #10 or 11 right now, residing along side the likes of Joe Frazier, Sonny Liston and Evander Holyfield. Those are the 4 occupying the 9th through 12th spots for me. Maybe Jack Johnson should be hovering around the same area as well...

Jack didn't beat the best comp in heavyweight history but he did dominate rather easily while sitting on the throne. No not that throne. I think it's worthy enough for a Top 10 ranking.

So does the omission of Wills and Greb damage his legacy so much to keep him out of the Top 10?

    1- Louis
    2- Ali
    3- Holmes
    4- Marciano
    5- Tyson
    6- Lewis
    7- Foreman
    8- Johnson
    9- Frazier
    10- Dempsey
    11- Holyfield
    12- Liston
    13- Wlad
    14- Jeffries

Another old white guy here.I only have one white boxer in my top 10 and it isn't Dempsey.
I voted him outside the top 15.
although I rate Joe Louis very highly and he only started boxing pro, a decade after Dempsey retired, he's light years ahead.

    Different styles.
I don't think Louis is "light years ahead", he just fought in a completely different style.

Based on accomplishments etc., Dempsey just inside or just outside the top 10 of all-time seems reasonable.
On a pound-for-pound basis he probably jumps ahead of some bigger fighters.
Head-to-head, that's all subjective. People seem to have completely different perceptions of his ability/skill level. I tend to see him as a highly skilled fighter, others sometimes seem to insist he was a primitive brawler. Weird.

I'll confess to being white though, so my opinion should be discounted.
