Is this heavyweight division the best since the 90's?

The success of both flabby comeback 40+ year old legends Holmes and Foreman is a huge blow to the 90s.

Holmes took the 0 of the best regarded rising contender in Mercer, and frankly deserved the win over Lewis' conqueror.

 

Nah, it looks more like a free for all actually.
But a large part of the 90's was exactly that, a free for all.

Here some names that held at least one of the 4 back in the 90's, some even the lineal and/or multiple times.

This entire "the 90s was great" mantra comes largely from US fans and commentators because HW boxing garnered public interest in the USA's 90s. They confuse public interest with the division being great. Big mistake.

 

Michael Bentt is missing from that list. He's probably the worst of 'em all.

Of course they were title shots like you mentioned. There were shots like that in all of the divisions across 10 years. There has been ever since there's been 3-4 belts. But you've obviously just picked out the negatives.

It's pointless listing the positives and the fights and fighters. Everyone knows about them.

Today's division is great. It's buzzing. Lot's of great characters, with lots of exciting match ups to be made. But that's it.

How the hell are you going to compare guys like Fury and Wilder to Lewis etc?

Wilder looks very suspect, and he only got the belt because he'd beaten Stiverne, who himself had only got the belt after beating Arreola in a vacant match up.

The 90's guys like Ray Mercer, McCall, Bruno and Morrison etc, would crack today's top 10 if they fought today.

I think you misunderstood me. I don't think today's division is great (its not awful neither). However, I think the supposed strength and depth of talent of the 90s HWs is greatly overrated. It was closer than average than most make it out to be IMO.

 

That will happen in lots of decades with 4 belts.

I'd say that 5 of those guys would probably make it into today's top 10, considering we've got guys like Thompson in it.

I think the 2nd tier fighters of the 90's would have success today, and many of them would be in today's top 10.
