First and formost i want to say thanks dempsey for sharing your info and i would like your advice on a situation. I just moved to New Mexico a month ago and i am not involved with a boxing gym yet. I would like to get involved in training fighters pros,amatuers,women,kids I dont care I just want to be a part of a team. I know you work out of TX so i was woundering if you have any recommendations or connections in NM? I plan on going to the athletic commission next week some time when I have some cash to pay for a license. Which brings me to my next question I expect like anything else ill have to start from the bottom up as a assistant of some sort volunteering my time but how hard/realistic is it to get a paying gig as a boxing trainer/assistant/cutman thanks!

New Mexico doesnt have much action, my advice go to any gym and see what they have and ask questions, you are looking for advice maybe that can lead you to another gym, and more contacts. Start with anybody at first, show them what you can do, if you do well it will get around. Sounds like you haven't decided what you wanna be, decide, then work it. Your reputation knocks on the door before you do.

Great documentary (eventhough very sad)..Just another example how important it is to have an experienced corner on your side..instead of choosing your trainer out of friendship.and trying to save $...
.McClellan did not even trust his trainer(long time friend) to wrap his hands!thats why he had to do it himself-that shouldve told him everything.he shouldve never separated from Emanuel Steward.
IMO..a friend-no matter how close-should never be in charge as the main trainer..(too much of an important job) ..maybe as an assitant..but not main trainer..that should be left to experienced pro's

Even more dangerous to a fighters career is a know it all father and family. I have seen and experienced fathers and family and it's a shame how many careers have been ruined by well meaning, know nothing fathers and family. A real good example is a fighter, by the name of Roberto Marroquin. A HOF'r seeing him said, he had it all, looks, one punch power, great boxing skills, in fact he gave Rigondeaux a tougher fite then did Donaire. I told him, at the beginning of his career, the one who is going to ruin your career is your father. He was dropped by his promoter in Feb. 2014, since that time he has fought only twice. That is a shame cos he could of been a champion, but his father and his friend, advised and managed him very poorly after their promoter dropped him. They had a fight scheduled in Dallas, that they turned down at the weigh in, over one pound. The promoter tried to make the fight happen by offering Marroquin double his purse, they didn't budge and didn't fight leaving the promoter with no main event the day before the show. The promoter lost money and I believe hasn't promoted another show.

I'll never understand why family gets in between..what would make them think that their way is better?..since they have ZERO experience with managing and training fighters---but its the fighters fault-cos his future(and his family's quality of life) is on the line- and should put his foot down-and leave that to experienced people..

yes this is sad i watched the fight. I' saw the rabbit punches but thought he was putting on the theatrics for the ref but i never saw Colon fight before this. My question is why didnt his corner who included his father stop the fight when he was holding the back of his head and complaining i mean they should know that was out of character for him and they should have known he was hurt and something was wrong. At the end of the round there was a fiasco with his gloves being taken off before the fight was over which ultimately ended the fight. My question is was this a stalling tactic to buy him more time between rds or was his corner so distraught at what they were seeing they honestly forgot the rounds ? One more question for Dempsey specifically, how should the cheif 2nd address the issue when his fighter is being fouled and how well does it actually work? Should he show some passion to let the ref know he means business or stay calm or should he address the commisioner? Again thanks

 

A note on the Colon- Williams bout, I reviewed the fight again and for the life of me I couldn't understand why, Cuban trainer Pedro Diaz, who had some experience wasn't more vocal.

 

I would like to share a story with you about a terrific flyweight I used to manage, Raul "La Cobrita" Martinez. Raul in the dressing had bad cramps and didn't think he could fight. He finally agreed, this was Raul's step up and in Vegas. Raul was a small flyweight fighting at bantam, was supposed to be a test. Raul went in and was in a hurry cos he didn't know if he could go rds with this guy.
