Prime Marciano V Tysons Challengers?

Something must be said of the opposition to.

Moore was a powerful counter puncher with a superior reach and all time great upper body movement. Marciano had to volume punch in 60 to 90 groupings to pin him down.

Briggs was a shorter slower punching bag, who Vitali evaded and paint brushed at will.

As crazy as it sounds, I'm not so sure I'd pick Marciano to beat Bonecrusher Smith. That would be a lot of size and power that the Rock would have to contend with. Not to mention a pretty tough chin to crack.

 

You are always the first to start the vulgar name calling, yet make post after post congratulating yourself for what a good job you think you are doing of making me despise you.

As seen on film, Moore would employ elusive upper body movement while in the cross armed guard. Moore also had a fabulous shoulder roll when looking to counter.

Your style of arguing is quite limited and tiresome at this stage. You ask that we accept the validation of a point as a cancellation of another. Doesn't work that way. Just because Moore utilized a tight guard does not equate to him not having great torso movement. Especially when footage shows him slipping punches in the guard.

I gave my opinion regarding his legs....the last 1000 times you brought up the quote. My response was always the same.

 

I don't think he was much better than Johnny Shkor. Very similar records and size.

 

With the slight difference that Smith proved he could mingle with some of the better fighters around. Shkor never really beat anyone of serious note with the exception of a ring worn Mauriello. I also happen to think that Smith could have lasted longer than one round with Walcott. And most of his defeats didn't come until he was between 36-45 years old. Johnny was basically done at 30.

 

Not true. Shkor also beat rated fighters Reynolds, Flynn, and Allen. From what we have, we also know the losses to Walker were described as wars.

Given Shkor had only been stopped previously by Walker late and the big Sid Peaks I don't think many would expect Walcott to do that.

Well, didn't Bonecrusher turn pro at the late age of 28 or 29. Shkor fought for like 15 years too, and was matched frequently against contenders.

Smith may have been a bit more polished but not to favor him over a Marciano who could deal with a similar sized powerful mauler of perhaps just a tad less quality. You specifically cited size and power.

Shkor and Smith were both known for toughness, but Smith has a shot at lasting the distance of he goes into his shell.

 

Be all that as it may, Shkor won only five of his last fifteen bouts entering the ring against Marciano and had fought only once in the previous fourteen months losing in one to Walcott. He was also basically in the last fight of his career with the exception of a win over a tomato can that he picked up four years later then packed it in for good. Its a pretty tough sell to try and convince anyone that he was still contender material when he and Rocky met. Bonecrusher for all his shortcomings beat prime versions of Bruno, Ribalta, Bey, Ferguson and an aged Mike Weaver in the same calendar year that Hercules had sparked The Truth. He also beat Witherspoon but I have long professed that fight to be a dive so I'll stick with it and not give him too much credit.. In addition he went many rounds with top heavy's like Tyson, Holmes and of course Spoon. A rocky decision is possible but I find it hard to think that he'd score the knockout or stoppage. Smith was durable and the size difference would make it very hard for Marciano to land flush to the face and often enough.. Rocky had to work very hard and through many rounds to stop even some of the smaller and older heavys that he actually beat. A big right hand from Smith could also end things at any given time.

 

He LOST to Reynolds.

 

Brain fart. He beat Payne who was rated no. 3 or so at the time.

 

I searched around and couldn't find a rating on Payne. I find it hard to believe that he was ranked in the top three given that he had lost 3 of his last 6, and ring magazine didn't even have him in its top 10 for 1949, though I realize those annual ratings don't reflect months. Still 3 seems a bit of a stretch.
