Golovkin denies rumour that Groves dropped him on sparring!

Well this is a bit awkward!

A quick Google says everyone from Sky Sports to Spencer Fearon being verifiable sources that Groves put Golovkin on the floor ...

No shame of course, Groves is a SMW who put Carl Froch on the floor.

But when something is actively denied such as this, my tendency is to research it more.

 

Well of course Brits would want it to be true. They're a little biased in this matter, wouldn't you say. The way I look at it is I don't pay attention to dumb sparring rumors. I heard SOOOO many during May/Pac that you would've expected Mayweather and Pacquiao to have both knocked eachother out.

 

Spencer Fearon has claim to fame in boxing only because he started the rumour in an interview. atsch

 

Who gives a **** that a fighter got dropped in sparring.

A fighter experiments with different angles and elements of his game he may not normally do so in a real bout.
If G got dropped, so what. Most knockdowns in sparring are flash knockdowns anyways.

They keep amateur records bud. Especially every meaningful amateur tourney fighters enter, wins and losses are recorded.

Also, sanchez wasn't any part of GGG during his amateur days. Never even knew who he was until he was brought to abel, pretty sure he was 10-15 fights into his pro career, before abel met him and fell in love

In just these 51 fights Golovkin lost 8 times

They are building a myth of a monster and just don't think anyone will check! I think a lot of fans won't be aware that, for example, he lost to Dirrell in the ams as you can see in this partial record.

If a number of people in camp said Groves dropped GGG then I am inclined to believe them over the myth makers who deny it ...

 

And yet a number of people in the camp said it didn't happen. Also, I think using amateur records to discredit someone's success is a little stupid. The dude went to the Olympic Finals, so stop with the trolling.

Also, the fight with Gaydarbek Gaydarbekov in the Olympic Games was a blatant robbery so there's that.

 

Fair point, to a degree. But punch stats carry less meaning than the quality of opponent. The best fighter he's faced is arguably Daniel Geale, so with a resume like that, it's not surprising the stats are heavily in GGG's favour. Boxing takes place in the squared circle not on a PC.

I don't recall GGG ever being down in a Professional Fight !!!

 

There is an opinion, that loss to Gaydarbekov was an exchange for gold in another fight for Kazakh team. GGG was not in his category because of the other fighter as well.

 

It's not so much people blaming him for fights not materializing. Fact is, he hasn't fought them. It's safe to agree that most of us believe he'll win but, until he actually does, we can't give him credit for those potential victories.

For the record, I don't believe his resume is bad. I think the misconception comes from him making it look so easy.
