It was supposedly a story of Gennady Golovkins' belief in the ability of George Groves to win a world title, but it turns out that after sparring George 'GGG' doesn't rate him in the slightest. ''He's a good boxer, but he lacks power'', and ''maybe he was heavy, but he was slow.'' Golovkin then casually mentions that the sparring was terminated after Golovkin landed a couple of hefty body shots. Coming from a guy who never usually denigrates other fighters, it's a bit worrying how condescending Golovkin is towards Groves and how little he obviously thinks of him.
There are leagues and levels, and that is no disrespect to Groves who is a great world class boxer. GGG just happens to be on the tallest mountain in the world, looking down on everyone else like they are stick insects.
I think George's best chance was the first fight with Carl, lets be honest he was schooling him for 6 rounds then the wheels slowly feel off, champions fight for a hard 12 rounds and nobody can take that away from Carl Froch. I feel GGG is simply a very special fighter and continues to prove it
Don't forget that he responded with that answer because he was asked about the rumours that groves put him down. Sounds to me like ggg went on the defensive. If the sparring had to be stopped because of a couple of body shots then I don't thing ggg would ever spar anyone
If anything the spectrum is reverse.. Groves is someone he fears in the boxing.. It's jabs to the head not hooks to the body.. GG KOs GGG Of course Groves has power.. you can see it..
"I did a couple of times [punching the] body, I broke [his] ribs I think, just I punched him, and his corner just said 'Okay, it's finished, stop." Interesting that he says Groves needs to improve his power, Shane McGuigan has said previously he wants more power in his shots but less volume. Did Spencer Fearon watch them two spar mate? He also said he saw Porter bash up Thurman in sparring also.
This was my feeling also, it's unlike GGG to belittle boxers at all. Makes me wonder if Groves did actually hurt GGG in sparing so now is acting all defensive.
