Lol at golovkin and kov being mentioned with Louis. Outside of a 50 yr old hopkins (FIFTY!) who the **** have either of those guys fought? Those guys are almost as old as Louis when he retired, havent had as many fights by nearly half, and we still dont know much about them. Lol at them being compared to the brown bomber.

 

I agree with this. But I actually think if Walcott who 2/3 of ringside reports felt won the first fight won the decision, that would take a bit more away from Louis's legacy.

You can say that Louis competition from 1946-1951 features his best opponents aside from Schmeling.

Louis was 34 for Walcott 1. Walcott also 34.

Louis was 36 for Charles. Charles was 29.

Louis was 37 for Marciano. Marciano was 28.

Louis still though past his best for Charles was badly whipped, and he had the height, reach and power edge. Louis might have won 2 rounds.

Past his best for Marciano, Louis was knocked through the ropes and counted out.

If Charles and Marciano were around in the early 40's to late 30's, we see if Louis in his prime could beat either.

Louis himself said he could never beat Rocky on styles, and clearly had trouble with skilled boxers below Charles ability, so these fights are much closer than many think.

 

It may have hurt his legacy much more in the immediate years post retirement.
I remember reading an article in which some black guy said that his first introduction to Louis was watching Marciano knock him out.
Many if not most blacks never saw Louis in his prime, and for some to see him lose to Marciano must have been a shock to those that did.
I don't personally think it hurts his legacy. Certainly no more than any other former great who just got old.
It's never pleasant for me to watch the great man in his comeback-it makes me sad-so from that point of view just the image of the invincible champ being a tired old man is in a sense damaging.
But for me his legacy was secure long before that.

Louis had been out of the ring for over 2 years when he came back for Charles. Farr and Conn were the only boxers that gave a prime Louis trouble ,and they would give Charles all he wanted too!

Charles was a highly skilled man. A boxer type with speed, much better than Farr, and IMO better than Conn as well. He also hit harder. Louis might need a KO to beat Charles. I'd pick Louis, but would not be shocked with a tough fight, or even a Charles decision if the judges were fair
