Pitching a shutout against Hopkins, even on the cusp of 50, blows away Stevenson's top 5 wins combined. So does stopping Jean Pascal, something Kovalev has now done twice. Campillo may have been a little past it and both Sillakh & Cleverly a bit flawed with vulnerabilities waiting to be exposed at the highest level, but each of those in the context of when Kovalev fought them is still a better scalp than Cloud (fresh off the soul-taking, confidence-draining, zero-snatching humiliation at the hands of Hopkins - and this matters, because Cloud was a fighter who thrived on intimidation and self-confidence in the classic bully mold, and once that mirage was punctured it was over for him at the top) or mid-graders like Bika, Fonfara or Karpency, who are better perhaps than either man's weakest names (empty husk of Dawson, Mohammedi, Edwards, etc) but still nothing more than capable contenders.

If you don't think Hopkins now is better than any version of Dawson seen in the ring since their rematch, I really can't help you. Horse to water, etc.

Good post. Kovalev is a top 5 pound for pound talent. Stevenson would have little chance to beat Krusher.

It been a while to see an aggressive upper weight fighter with such accuracy and timing.

Dawson was a skeleton because Ward made him drain himself to make weight. Dawson got knocked out by Ward and then got knocked out by Stevenson.

Hopkins, on the other hand, was not weight-drained in his fight with Kovalev. In fact, he was the A-side and was considered not only the A-side but also one of the top 3 in the division - some critics even considered him the best LHW at the time. He did not get knocked out, so no, he was not a skeleton.

An old post of mine

Dawson was the lineal LH champion when Stevenson beat him, but don't forget Campillo should've been by rights the unified WBA/IBF champion when Kovalev blitzed him too. Campillo had been robbed horribly against both Shumenov and discounting those terrible decision, which everyone should, he would've been on a 4.5 year long winning streak going into the Kovalev fight, 5.5 if you count the the first Murat fight which I've heard was also a bad decision too (although I've not seen it so I can pass comment).

Cleverly was undefeated when Kovalev trounced him and Kovalev deserves extra credit in my book for travelling all the way over Wales into hostile territory in the lion's den to take his title. So those wins over an undefeated Cleverly and a Campillo who'd not legitimately lost in nearly half a decade should've bagged Kovalev three belts to wrap around his waist and by rights he should've been the unified WBA/IBF and WBO champion back then already.

Kovalev KO victim Cornelius White whipped Dmitry Sukhotsky who KO'd Nadjib Mohammedi.

Kovalev then sparked out the highly talented big punching yet fragile chinned Ismayl Sillakh in absolutely brutal fashion in less than four minutes to cap off the year.

Stevenson's win over Dawson was a very impressive performance. However, Dawson was coming off a demoralizing one-sided stoppage loss, the first of his career. He'd also been knocked senseless in sparring by Edison Miranda during one of his final sessions during preparation for Ward and he was also getting bossed in sparring all throughout that camp by Lionell Thompson, too. That's the same Lionell Thompson Kovalev pulverized in three rounds a few weeks later.

And Tony Bellew posted on the Brit forum at the time that he'd seen the video of the Dawson-Miranda sparring session and that Dawson had been badly hurt.

Cloud was coming off the back of two defeats (including the robbery against Campillo) when Stevenson beat him.

Boone was coming off three loses when he fought Stevenson too (although one was a SD), one of them being a two round blow out to Kovalev.

And Bellew had already been beaten by Kovalev stoppage victim Cleverly and don't forget he'd also been the recipient of a gift draw against Chilemba two fights prior to facing Stevenson too.

I'm not saying a fighter coming of a loss is automatically any less dangerous or formidable. However, it's a little different when they're coming of multiple back-to-back loses or one-sided stoppage defeats. And all of Stevenson's opponents with the exception of Bellew were coming off one-sided stoppage defeats or multiple back-to-back loses, whereas all of Kovalev's were coming off wins (discounting the robberies). Cleverly was unbeaten. White had won five on the trot. Campillo hadn't lost in nearly five years and Sillakh had won four on the spin, albeit at a lower level.

And that was written before Kovalev had whopped B-Hop and Pascal x2, and in their backyards/home countries as has been the case with many of Kovalev's wins, how many times has Adonis done that? :think

Since that post was written Stevenson has beaten a way past his best career SMW in Bika who was coming off a loss, a draw, and a MD win against Anthony ''The Poodle Dirrell'' and Marco Antonio Periban respectively. You could make an argument that Bika should've been 0-3 in his last 3 going into the Stevenson fight and there's no question he was way past his best either.

Fonfara was getting his ears boxed off for most of their fight by Kovalev's leftovers Campillo and Cleverly who Kovalev wrecked silly in 4 rounds gave Fonfara everything he could handle and some (and in Fonfara's adopted backyard Chicago aka Pole Central) despite the fact he fought like an absolute idiot. That was a very winnable fight for Cleverly had he used his brain. Very winnable.

Fonfara beating Chavez Jr. is a great win? You mean the same Chavez who got his ass paddled by journeyman Brian Vera in the first fight only to receive a gift from the judges. The same Chavez who spent his entire career beating up on opponents who were naturally much smaller than him and then got wrecked as soon as he stepped in against someone his own size or slightly bigger?
