Sergei Kovalev vs Andre Ward - who have you got?

Can Ward take Kovalev's power? That's a big question, Pascal has a granite chin, but even he couldn't handle it.

 

Lots of question marks about Wards chin, and Kovalev is very heavy handed, but whilst he put a beating on Pascal, he never actually rendered him unconcious, or even came close to doing so.

Kovalev looks good at range, but pretty average up close.

Ward is the master of defense and inside fighting, and not having to dry down to 168 will undoubtedly improve his strength and stamina.

Kovalev will have great difficulty trying to land clean on Ward imo, and i see Ward spoiling and roughing Kovalev up on the inside.

Ugly fight with a bruised and bloodied Kovalev losing by 3 or 4 rounds.

P.S i am not a Ward fan.

 

I used to think that Ward would out point Kovalev with a bit to spare but seeing Kovalev over the last year or so I have to say that He is more than just a power puncher. He has very underrated boxing skills and a good range of punches as well. I'm not saying he would outbox Ward but I think he has the skills to land his heavier punches often enough to keep Ward wary and on the defensive and pull out a surprise points win.

While watching the fight last night I almost felt as though while Sergei was dominating Pascal, smashing him from pillar to post he wasn't actually trying his best, and seemed slightly disinterested.
With a proposition like Ward I think we'd see the best Kovalev ever, which is a scary prospect. Of course, Ward is a supreme technician, and a great inside fighter, but a really motivated, strong, big Kovalev is something which I can't overlook - and the main reason why I think Sergei would win - but it is really a 50/50 fight.

 

My gut feeling is that Ward spoils to a UD.

Ward is a world class top echelon fighter make no mistake about that but his inactivity will hinder him imo
Kov is a much much better boxer than given credit for and has a very good jab and it seems every punch he lands saps an opponents energy amd reserve. For me kov by stoppage in a good fight that hes leading in too

 

Kov would destroy Ward, I don't think it is even that close, Ward is hugely overrated in my opinion.

Ward is good, actually very good but he is very beatable and Kovalev is just too big, too powerful and simply not is awe anybody, Ward's reputation will not save him from a savage beating. Kovalev would not over think it like Froch did, he would not try and be too technical like Froch did, Kovalev would do a number on Ward.

I am convinced Ward won't take the fight anyway, somehow he will wriggle his way out of it, he will get "injured" and then need another 6 tune ups.

I like Ward but at this point Kovalev by brutal KO.

 

Kovalev will break Ward's will until he is no more.

He won't be troubled at all by Andres' punches for the judges

Ward has all reasons to backpedal and clinch, because if he does not he will soon be broken by Kovalev's might and precision. Kovalev is relentless in his offensive and he does not give much space and time to his opponents - he pursues you until he breaks you completely. Ward won't be able to keep him off of him.

Kovalev isn't just some brawler puncher, he is a boxer and can cut off the ring and overwhelm any boxer. Once he lands 10-20 power punches on his opponent the fight is basically over, and ward will be no different to any other of Sergey's victims of the past.

Ward knows he's in a hell of a fight if he steps in the ring with Kovalev, that's why he's asking for all these warm up fights, and playing these political mind games and spin, because if he wasn't scared he'd fight Sergy right now.

I saw some weaknesses in Kovalev during the first Pascal fight
Weaknesses which a fighter like Ward would exploit.

Ward will beat Kovalev most likely by TKO in the later rounds.

But it depends on how much Ward has got left.

The gifted boxer beats the tough guy every time. Ward made Froch look so very ordinary by simply being 'just too good', nobody did that before or since and Froch has admitted that the result would be identical next time. It's the same with Mayweather, he is in so many dull fights because he is just too talented a boxer for everybody else, boxing is dull for the spectator if a fighter isn't getting hit. I think Ward wins a messy affair quite comfortably on points
