I wonder why Joe Calzaghe was never offered millions for his return to boxing?

The fact is, Calzaghe never had a style made for longevity. His style is akin to one of those $1 little candles that burn bright, for a minute before consuming all the wax and becoming a throw away.

I'd bet at this stage of His life he could easily be beaten by ODLH wearing high heels and panty hose.
Fortunately for Calzaghe fans, there is no real money to be made in ODLH doing so.

In that particular instance, it would've been a multi-million dollar fight on both ends. Ward's star power was at its highest and it would've been viewed as a torch-passing fight.

Had it been made, IMO we'd have seen that be Ward's transition to PPV. That's what HBO was looking to do with Andre after the Dawson destruction, and luring Calzaghe out of retirement would've been a quick route to it.

The Froch fight would've also been huge business, and they tried desperately to get Calzaghe back in the ring.

One can argue that those were both for legacy or personal reasons, but a big part too is that those were healthy 7 figure paydays to be had in getting Joe out of retirement.

Regardless of whether we split hairs on the source, my point remains that Joe did in fact get offers that would've been worth millions to come back. That's why the thread title is off base. :good

He was a world titlist for a decade straight. Longevity is among his legacy's biggest selling points.

That "sellin point" is liable for false advertising.
In those 10 years he fought majority of bums and even those he needed that good ole Brit ref help.
Had he been in quality competitive matches like Froch, Taylor or Pavlik as example, Joe would have been on the pipe a lot sooner.

Calzaghe makes very easy work of all the fighters you mentioned. Truthfully, I don't know if he loses (actually loses) a single round.

Calzaghe is so under rated on here, it's like the greatest smw ever wasn't even there. When you're truly great like Joe and a fmj, you make top tier fighters look much less than they really are.

I can't recall Joe ever struggling with anyone after a few rounds, he make a Eubank (almost his best) look like he didn't belong in the same gym as him. Possibly a sparring partner on his best days

 I saw those matches with those full time dishwashers and chimney sweeps.
Calzaghe would get them on the ropes, throw a 4 slap combination and the brit ref would dash in and stop the fight.

Eubank was at worst a bum and at best mid b-level.

Haha. This was a few years back when I asked you if "SMW" or 168, was stronger than LHW during Jones' and Calzaghe's regin.

You gave multiple years of the top 10.. I used your research in a thread regarding the Roy-Dariusz debate.

Ohh yeah - was this via PM? Do you still have that?

I might be getting this mixed up with another conversation, but was it this?

he should have fought froch when froch was an up and commer .

taylor was middleweight champ beat hopkins in 05 twice had mandatory v wright in 06 when calzaghe fought lacy and in 07 when calzaghe unified v kessler taylor lost to pavlik so the timelines for taylor moving up were not there.

pavlik was offered a calzaghe fight
sometime around 05 i think it was.

There was a very narrow window, if any, in which Calzaghe vs. Froch was really viable in terms of being a big-money fight.

In 2008 when Calzaghe had already moved up to LHW for his US seniors ATG tour, Froch was still at British title level at SMW. He still hadn't even fought Pascal yet! (that was a month after Calzaghe vs. Jones)

i agree / but after froch beat magee early 2006 who was ranked and calzaghe beat lacy i would have liked a calzaghe v froch fight instead of manfredo.

IMO calazghe would have won wide on points / but froch went on to have a stellar career and legacy wise it would have helped calzaghe..

but or course thats hindsight on my part.
