The guy is like still early 30s and it seems like his career is done. Has he gone through too many wars or certain losses broke him down mentally? What gives?
Chad liked to party. He tested positive for having drugs in his system early in his career and I think hung on to that lifestyle. That and as he started to get a little older had trouble keeping his weight down. I'll never forget the beating that Andre Ward gave him.. I actually felt sorry for Dawson. At one point I had high hopes for Chad eventually unifying the lightheavyweight crown and having a Spinks like career.. But I was wrong..
To me, it lookd like getting into some bad business arrangements killed his motivation. It doesn't help that he'd lose focus from time to time in the first place. Shame...in a better scenario and with some better choices on his end, I think he could've been better than he was. Chad had the tools for it. His team hung him out to dry on the Ward deal. No way should an offer of 30% money to travel to Oakland at Andre's weight have even made it to Chad to sign in the first place.
Because he really wasn't anything special. And win the competition got a little better he was exposed....
It's simple really. Ward ruined him. He was never the same fighter after that. Chad Dawson was a phenomenal talent in his prime, and was the legit LHW champ for years. I've seen the Pascal fight when they aired it live, Dawson was literally toying with him, gave up the early rounds because he looked bored in there. After he got cut from that accidental heatbutt, he started turning up the heat, landing leather on Pascal. Fight was stopped though, very unfortunate for Dawson. He had an excellent jab, reach and underrated boxing skills. He also had a chin on him too, that extra muscle he had to lose ruined him and his punch resistance. I've seen him take BOMBS before the Ward fight without flinching.
No. Only a limited number of people get in and I think there will always be better candidates than Dawson
Very talented , but a complete idiot. The move down to 168 was career suicide. After beating Tarver , Johnson and Hopkins he just needed to bide his time with some mandatories and wait for Ward to come up. But that's now history and he isn't relevant anymore.
The drop down in weight to fight Ward had an effect, we've now seen Jones Jr, Dawson and Byrd all fall apart after dropping down a division or more, you could maybe even add De La Hoya to that list, though he was already in decline. Dawson's reflexes seem to have gone, he's still fast but he can't see the punches coming like he used to. The weight drain combined with poor lifestyle choices has seen him rapidly decline, he's always been very talented but also very lazy and you can't expect to have a long career living that lifestyle.
