Edwin Rodriguez is a 6'0 30 year old Light Heavyweight with a 28-1 19 KO's record. Born in Moca, Dominican Republic and fighting out of Worcester, Massachusetts, USA. Personally I think E-Rod is one of the most underrated boxers in the sport, mainly due to all of the Ward bashers attempting to undermine what they viewed as a weak defense. But the reality is he's a very solid fighter who seems to be plagued by somewhat of a dilemma, he's trapped between two stylistic worlds, at times he's a very talented boxer-puncher with a solid jab good array of punches with great accuracy and a good defense, and sometimes he comes in like a marauding barbarian swinging a savage overhand right like a Wildman trying to live up to his badass moniker La Bomba. He's torn between being smart and playing it safe and going testicles to the wall and putting on a show for the fans, kind of like what seems to be going on in the mind of Robert Guerrero. I like watching both sides, but of course I prefer the all action version of Edwin, which he employed with brutal efficiently against Escalera, Grachev and Findley impressively bombing them out in brutal fashion, and early in 2015 taking out Savigne conqueror Craig Baker (not a great stoppage) in 3. But that strategy almost backfired in a big way in late 2015, after dropping the undefeated Michael Seals early in round 1 he walked into two back to back sharp straight right counters dropping him twice and out on his feet, the second shot that dropped him literally almost tor his head off. I still say that he has an iron chin because that shot truly would KO anyone, but he came back and beat the hell out of Seals and stopped him in 3 in a short but very sweet candidate for FOTY. Yeah so what he didn't make weight and ended up losing to Andre Ward, most do, that's nothing to be ashamed of. He's bounced back in exciting and seems to be working his way to a shot a Adonis Stevenson, and if he gets him it will probably be the FOTY the year with KD's galore and it may only end up being 1 round. Edwin will be facing Thomas Williams Jr. on March 12th on the undercard of Thurman-Porter. This should be every bit as exciting as Rodriguez-Seals.:happy [YT]78Vq5Uu9Ff8[/YT]
He had quite the easy route to the Monaco Million in that tourney. Still, I found his blasting out of Grachev impressive and still view it as slightly underrated. Nothing great. But Grachev fought Bute relatively even after Bute/Froch and knocked out Sillakh back when Sillakh literally was almost everyone's pick as the very-soon-to-be dominant #1 fighter at Light Heavyweight (and I have the thread to prove that). He's an entertaining fighter. It's unfortunate he fought Ward and laid an egg. He will be remembered for that non-performance by most, I'm afraid. Plus the whole nature of fighting Ward makes 65% of boxing fans dismiss him as a fraudulent bum with no skills whatsoever and the other 35% of boxing fans claiming he's a hot commodity and one of the best fighters of all time.
Yes sir. BP: the sharpest poster on ESB. There is a measurement that says he was. And I believe there are still some old school minds, even if just a few, that would agree with it (I not being one of them). And since he came in as a Light Heavyweight for the Andre Ward fight........... [gulp]. Well, lets just hope Ward fanboys and haters alike don't enter this thread. I don't think most people are aware of this, haha.
Definitely a good fight - I'd have to pick La Bomba (who as you say is rather underated IMO) so long as he doesn't go too wild early. Good take on Rodriguez BTW - the kid can box some, and the Ward fight definitely shouldn't be held against him (nor against Andre - it was a decent if hardly marquee level win), but he really does need to learn to show some patience in there. I was genuinely :-( when I saw how he came out against Seals and got clipped. Looking forward to Thurman - Porter too, gonna be a good night of boxing.:bbb
He still holds the lineal light heavyweight championship. The championship was won at light heavyweight and can only be lost at light heavyweight. Andre Ward fought Edwin Rodriguez at some kind of a catchweight and the bout is listed as being for the WBA super middleweight championship so that's not a light heavyweight fight and thereby the lineal light heavyweight championship was not on the line. Edwin Rodriguez World Lineal Light heavyweight champion.
Hopefully he can get past Williams with relative ease, and that could set him up with a Stevenson match. And that might give people something else to remember him for.:hey
By the way Moca, Dominican Republic the city where Edwin was born is nicknamed La Villa Heroica or The Village Of Heroes.
Huh. I've lived in Boston my whole life and never heard anyone refer to Worcester as Wormtown. Google says you're right and that's a real thing, though. :conf
I'd never heard that either, and I'm pretty well versed in city nicknames, for some strange reason, but I Googled some Worcester nicknames and it sounds damn cool so I went with it.
If you take out Findley(who is a tough journeyman), pretty much everyone he has fought for the past 6 years or so has had no more than 2 losses on their record. Of the last 10 guys, hes fought, 6 have been undefeated. That's a cool little stat!
