What a nonsense article. Johnson was not prosecuted under a Jim Crow anything. This writer doesn't know **** about this story. Just like the hacks that will likely eventually pardon him because its the perfect pointless political football.
On this topic, I agree with you. The guy beat the tar out of the women and the sick and had trouble everywhere he went. What a swell guy. 99% of the people in the USA do not know who Jack Johnson was, so the President could slip in this name easily.
This is completely irrelevant. The only things that we should even remotely consider, is whether the charge actually levelled against him, was fair, accurate, consistent with the public interest on its own merits, and proven beyond reasonable doubt. If you dont think that it was, then you should argue for a pardon.
Didn't Johnson skip town on a bond? I think so. The guy was a pimp among other things. They got Capone on taxes, not his other crimes.
Then feel free to argue for charges against him, for skipping bail, but it is irrelevant to this charge. He was not convicted for being a pimp, in as much as it was ever the case. And here is the crux of the matter. They used methods against him, that they normally only use to go after the mafia. He was not a major organised crime boss, he was just a boxing champion that society found inconvenient. At least Capone had actually fiddled his taxes according to the spirit of the law, Johnson was basically blameless in respect of this charge.
