Yeah ok Puca - I should have used some other expression obviously there. I would just say that the boxers themselves consistently say they are well looked after by MGM. They cant all be lying surely. Also lets not forget the core fact about what happened on friday - it was an attack ON Kinahan, not an attack BY him. According to the strict letter of the law attending a weigh-in isnt a crime - the criminality/gunplay/murder etc was all by the other side. I know this will rile a lot of people but the Kinahans were the "victims" here. (Iknow, I know......):thumbsup
I think the gist of your argument is that you don't really care if theres a criminal element to our sport. So long as the lads are being "looked after" and think Kinahan is sound. Looked after with cash that came from where? I'm accused of being on my high horse but does nobody give a flying **** how bad this makes the sport look? Its actually turns people off it, so the short term gain of getting a few decent irish pros a few quid may actually result in others looking on and not wanting to get involved with the sport and all the riff raff it entails. Thats your stance, id fundamentally disagree. Its actually depressing that this "better than nothing" approach is seen as fine. What happens for instance if in the long term MGM get a bit bigger and some of their criminal element scares off any competition in the market of irish pro boxing? I would hope you are not serious when you say the Kinahan's are the victims here, you have gone full re**** if thats the case but I dont think even you are that ridiculous. Answer this, do you think Matt Macklin could simply walk away from MGM in the morning if he could?
almost 100% of reasonable people would agree with you. I feel from the line I highlighted you wouldnt have a problem with (at least some) drugs being decriminalised. Well ok. Think this through. Decriminalise drugs, tax the prceeds etc etc. One of the "Social dividends" of such action will be ...what? ....yep - money will be available to fund community initiatives in deprived areas, including very likely more funding for Boxing...gyms ...equipment etc etc.. So .... In a way Kinahan is already doing precisely this - and he's cutting out the middleman - the corrupt politicians and quango insiders etc who pollute this country who would be creaming off a very big slice for themselves. Could it maybe be said Kinahan - love him or loathe him is cutting tothe chase - going direct to the consumer (funding boxers and facilities etc) as it were.....just food for thought thats all. :thumbsup
it was so blatant and public / with the suspects virtually all going to be on cctv / gardai most probably have mugshots of all the suspects so a wig is not going to be of much help with facial recognition software. used to hear about this and occasionally see the aftermath of it in all the years i lived in east london /but dublin is the same with drug gangs. sunday world tommorrow will love it with a 6 page spread. reminds me of a similar high profile murder of the women reporter many years back/ veronica guerin by gangland to make a statement.
Lets hope the fallout from last friday wont spread too far. For example the upcoming Matthews-Flanagan fight. With the likes of Ormond waiting in the wings for his shot - his career could be affected. Already the likes of Luke Keeler - who has been sadly inactive lately - has lost out with his fight presumably cancelled. He was really chomping at the bit about getting busy again....and this happens. Also Wazzen might think twice about coming here again anytime soon. So fridays events could really hit Irish boxers hard here.
w@rren will distance himself from these guys in future.... I think mgm need to put a legite front man to run this franchise...someone who is separate and untainted by crime.... and gang members should stay away from the shows and weigh ins... will they be allowed to run anymore show in Dublin .... that's unlikely:good
Gary Sweeney too. Finaly set to make his debut, literally just stepped off the scales. Poor fella didn't even have a chance to put his trousers back on.
Indeed. Irish boxing is a small pond. The ripples of what happened will spread to every corner. There will be more casualties than the guys who got shot.
as far as I heard they were looking to run regular shows in Belfast as well Dublin ....but they are toxic now:good
Lets not overreact. Granted its bad but lets not write MGM off just yet. Any number of scenarios could happen yet. Lets not forget that MGM are the injured party here with the big losers being their unlucky boxers trying to make a living It was an attack ON them not an attack BY them. The law might catch the people who attacked the MGM outfit (ok ok ) The drug underworld/paramilitary underworld is in a constant state of chaos and flux. Shifting sands, shifting loyalties, greed, treachery etc The attacking outfit are unlikely to be able to sustain a 'war' against MGM for long. This situation might just peter out and die a natural death. War is bad for business - there might be a truce....sensible heads might prevail here, who knows. Lets give MGM a chance here, for the boxers' sake - it might not be all over for them just yet - many boxers careers are at stake. Hopefully it will be business 'not quite as usual' - but business nonetheless, soon.
Think they've had enough chances at this stage with Jamie Moore being shot and Friday night's incident. They will no doubt be looking for revenge at this stage so it's only going to get worse. Being associated with them is enough to put you in danger. Hard to see where MGM and boxing south of the border go from here.
The bad news is 'they' are doing more than just looking for revenge - a member of the Hutch gang has just been shot in North Strand, Dublin..:-( But is there proof that Daniel Kinahan is actively involved in crime? Has he a serious criminal record? The boxers speak well of him and say they are treated well at MGM. You dont choose your parents and Im just wondering are people blaming the sins of the father on the son.
