He actually looked great at 224 Lbs. (Frazier II). Even at 235 and close to 40 years old he looked really good when he fought Qawi. Foreman may have had a similar height, reach, and weight as Norton in those days but Foreman seemed much bigger to me. Foreman was bigger than Ali, Holmes, and Norton and would not look small against guys like Bowe, Lewis, and even the Klitschko's.

It's like the Ultimate Warrior vs. Hulk Hogan. Hogan was bigger but the Warrior was plenty big enough.

No he doesn't but look at the person that each of them are. Joe Louis played ball to become champion and look good. Muhammad Ali was not like that though he needed the approval of no other person. He was his own man and was himself through and through. He had the courage to be right or wrong in any situation.

What I'm getting at is that Louis (and Marciano) were more popular with former fighters and ex opponents than Ali, not the public.

Ken Norton said once that he and Ali got on really well before and after their fights. And Shavers,Lyle,Cooper,Bugner and Mildenberger spoke highly of him. The only one who seemed to harbour negative feelings was Joe Frazier. And you can understand this in a way as Muhammad went way over the top in his gamesmanship towards him. Joe should have got over it quicker than he did, though. And Frazier was no angel in that way either. He was calling Ali Clay as far back as 1966. Knowing how provoked Ali felt about the Terrel and Patterson thing,he must have known what he was doing.

Joe Louis was one of the all time nice guys.

I don't Quarry and Chuvalo were that keen on him unlike the feeling they had for Frazier and Foreman.
Cooper made his fame out of fighting Ali, don't know about Lyle, Shavers and Bugner.
I didn't say they didn't like him but their didn't seem to be the warmth there was with Louis and Rocky, Conn, Farr, Schmeling, Charles etc etc
He even got on Max Baer and Galento in later life.
What Ali did to Frazier stunk and I don't blame smokin' Joe at all

Ali's admitted that he went too far with Frazier, verbally. One of those things you look back on and think "****" !!

Forman was naturally thicker than BOwE And lewis. In the amateurs at 19 he weighed 226 ,lewis and BOwE at 22 And 23 weighed 220 and 216 respectively in the amateurs. Forget the extra weight, they did adapt their bodies to a modern era.it was mass gained in a gym.forman was a natural 230 pounder.in the 90s he (young foreman)would have fought at 235-240 easily. In 1976 he weighed 232 And he looked great And solid

I am not a big fan of the visual test, of a assessing a fighters physical assets.

I probably don’t give a fighter much credit, for having the better physical assets.

Based on that film, I would say that Foreman looked like an impressive physical specimen, but Norton would not have looked impressive next to Louis prime 4 prime.

I'm probable being unfair comparing Ali to Louis in the popularity stakes.
Louis was that popular with his former opponents that the even had Rocky lending him money:lol:

Louis was about the same size as Ali. Maybe an inch shorter, and similar weight when in similar shape. Ali maybe 5 or 6 pounds heavier. They were quite heavy in the legs.
Norton was actually bigger, in terms of lean mass. Hardly any fat on him.
Foreman was biggest of them, maybe not as muscled as Norton but he had a bigger frame.
But there's really not that much difference in them all.

Ali was totally controlled by the Nation of Islam!
