2000 to 2003- Roy Jones Jr 2004 to mid 05- Bernard Hopkins late 05 to 07- Floyd Mayweather late 07 to late 2011- Manny Pacquiao 2012 to early 2015- Floyd Mayweather early 2015 to present day- Roman Gonzalez Anyone who has it any different doesn't know a God damn thing about boxing.
Agreed, Pacquiao had just knocked out Morales twice and Barrera once. Mayweather s****ing by De La Hoya and knocking out Hatton isn't quite as good, especially since Pacquiao was just about to beat them even more decisively. Looking over Calzaghe's record the only time you could have given him top p4p status is 2008 because of his victories over old Hopkins and old Jones. Mayweather is retired and out of the picture, but at the same time Pacquiao beats an old De La Hoya and a prime Marquez. The Marquez win edges things in Pacquiao's favor that year.
While I agree that Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao both deserved to be on a top pound for pound list from 2012-2015 I wouldn't put either man at the very top. Ward, Donaire, Rigondeaux, and possibly Martinez were all doing better work by then. It's sort of like how I probably wouldn't put Hopkins at #1 in 2004-2005. He's on the list but not at the top. His longevity is impressive, his technique is commendable, but he doesn't have the physical tools anymore to be totally dominant like he once was.
Haven't you gone from arguing who was the best P4P fighter in each individual year to who was the best over a period of time again though? If that's the case then Mayweather, again, is top for a far longer period of time. Is the question; who was the best P4P fighter in each individual year? Or; who ended the year as P4P #1? Because there appears to be a lot of flip-flopping to justify the positioning. Either way, there's just no earthly way you can put Pac top in so many years. You have Pac top in 2004 - when he has a draw with JMM and a win against the mighty Fahsan 3K Battery. You have him top in 2005 - when he lost to Morales and has a solitary win over Hector Velazquez (42-10-2 at time of fight, present record 57-26-3) (if you're assessing over a longer period, then how can you still have Pac top at this point with those two wins in two years?) 2006 you can make the case. 2007, I've already argued further up 2008 nobody disputes (however - if you have Pac top in 2008, how can you not have Mayweather top in 2007. self-defeating logic) 2009 again, little to dispute - the other big wins of the year only going to fighters who fought once. Mayweather, Mosley etc 2010 clearly Sergio Martinez' year. Pavlik and Williams. One of the best years of any boxer in recent memory 2011 clearly Andre Ward's year. Abraham and Froch wins. 2012 Marquez.
