one thing I never understand about andre ward as an amauter is why he wasn never sent to any world junior/youth or senior world championhsips or even continental championships for that matter he only fought outside the usa twice, once in a pointless duals match and then the Olympics, think he might have fought in mexico once too I know he says he has been unbeaten since 12 but why wasn't he sent to any major tournaments at all? was he afraid of travelling back then?
Does anyone know much about his AM record? Like wins against current pros etc. Would be intrigued to know. Think someone lashed a link on here ages ago with details for him, Froch and a coupe of other guys
was looking it up earlier and he beat Curtis stevens 22-0 and beat him another time 7-2 apart from that cant find anyone else
This is what Virgil Hunter had to say about that. He said he deliberately chose not to send Ward to any major international tournaments because he didn't want anyone to see a tape of him so they could ''figure out his style'' in advance. 2:18 mark [YT]cyOaIbSTsV0[/YT]
I surprised he didn't write a letter to the Olympics committee asking them to move the games to Oakland after he qualified, maybe he did
Type his name into the search box and have a look on there. I know he fought Tim Bradley, Curtis Stevens, and Rommel Rene a few times http://amateur-boxing.strefa.pl/
Ward aka the real son of god fought Jesus in the amateurs too, Jesus Gonzalez. Unfortunately the good lord above was in Dre's opponent's corner that night and he lost.
Because at that time he was only 16 or something. Why rush it? And travleing as an amateur could have been a personal choice; School, family - that kind of things. They were likely happy the way he progressed and performed, so they kept him close to home.
Well for one, there wasn't all these youth/junior world, championships, back then. They're a relatively recent phenomenon. Also he went pro young. Wasn't like he missed out on a load of tournaments. http://www.boxing-scoop.com/show_boxer.php?boxer_ID=2824
Beat Curtis Stevens and Jonathan Banks by stupidly wide margins. Beat Marcus Johnson too. Like most amateur records, its hard to find detailed amateur records
